River Hawks Go To UMBC for Valentine's Day Matinee

 The River Hawks enter the home stretch of the 2016 season, wrapping up their season series against the UMBC Retrievers on Valentine's Day at 1 p.m.

Looking at the River Hawks
The Maine Black Bears completed the season sweep of the River Hawks, leaving Lowell with a 73-46 win. Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) finished 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, scoring a team-high 15 points. The junior also connected on her 100th career three. Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) added 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the effort. 

Leading the Flock
The UMass Lowell offense is led by a trio of players averaging double-digits this season. Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) is controlling the attack with 14.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Gibbs is scoring 12.4 points per game with 7.8 rebounds, while Hayner is scoring 12.1 points and hitting 40.8 percent (42-103) of her three-pointers. Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) has dished out 82 (3.4 Ast/Game) assists to facilitate the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has 18 blocks and 26 steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 534-of-1325 (40.3%) from the field and 32.6 percent (123-377) from beyond the arc.

Scouting UMBC
The Retrievers (14-10, 5-6) are coming off a 69-65 overtime at Stony Brook on Feb. 11. UMBC leads the America East and rank 27th in Division I in turnover margin (+4.38) and 43rd in turnovers per game (19.0). Taylor McCarley ranks 12th in DI in free throw attempts (170), 15th in free throws made (121) and 32nd in assists (127). McCarley (13.4 ppg) and Pandora Wilson (13.2 ppg) rank 10 and 11, respectively, in the America East in scoring. Wilson is chipping in a team-best 6.8 rebounds per contest, while McCarley is adding 5.3 assists and 2.6 steals. Sophomore guard Laura Castaldo is shooting 32.5 percent from beyond the arc for 1.7 three point field goals per game. As a squad, the Retrievers are connecting on 36.3 percent (500-1378) from the field and on 100-of-362 (27.6%) from three-point range. 

Series History
The River Hawks lead the series 4-1, but the Retrievers are coming off a 66-48 win in the last meeting on Jan. 16.

1000-Point Club
Lindsey Doucette became the 15th player in program history to eclipse the 1000-point plateau, with a career-high 28 points against Hartford. With 335 points this season, the senior has 1,041 in her career. Doucette has set career-highs with 142 field goals and 329 points scored this season, overcoming her total of 308 as a sophomore. Doucette also needs five points to enter the top-10 in all-time scoring (1,046). With six points she will move into sole possession of 10th. 

Always a Threat from Deep
As a unit, the River Hawks are leading the league shooting 32.5 percent from downtown, and are third averaging 5.3 makes per game. Last season, UMass Lowell led the league in three-point shooting with a 33.2 3FG% and averaged 6.8 makes per game.

Balling in the America East
The River Hawks are fourth in the in the conference with a 72.2 free throw percentage, and 11.7 offensive rebounds per game. UMass Lowell is fourth averaging 58.8 points and shooting 40.3 percent from the field. The team sits in fourth with a rebounding margin of +1.7.

Spreading the Wealth
The River Hawks have had 12 games with three or more scorers in double figures. In three of the 12, UMass Lowell has had four players with 10 or more points.

Controlling the Glass
The River Hawks have outrebounded their opponents in 16 games, including a five-game streak from November 28-December 9. UMass Lowell held a 41.8 (209) to 33.2 (166) advantage throughout the run.

Against Stony Brook, Frase registered her 200th career assist, and Doucette grabbed the 750th rebound in her career (2.6) … Doucette rejected her 100th career shot against Hartford (2.3) … Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) made her first career start at Maine (1.13) … Frase registered her 500th career point against Stony Brook (1.9) … Shackelford made her debut at Fairleigh Dickinson and scored eight points … Doucette's 17 rebounds against FIU is the second-best single game performance in the America East this season … Nazarae Butler (Columbus, Ohio) and Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made first collegiate starts at Rhode Island … Frase snagged her 100th and 101st career rebounds against Columbia … Butler and Smith made their collegiate debuts against No. 6 Maryland.
