LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held its second annual "Adam Keenan Santa Bash" on Wednesday, November 30, in support of former baseball player Adam Keenan and the American Heart Association.
Â
Adam Keenan played just one season with the River Hawk baseball team, but left a lasting impact. In 2011, at the age of 20, he unexpectedly passed away due to Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) while out on the field playing the sport he loved. Every year since his passing, SAAC members have come together to hold a fun event on campus to raise money for "Adam's Team."
Â
"This event carries on in the name of Adam Keenan with all the funds raised going to the American Heart Association in his name," said Coordinator for Academic Support Services Michael Anderson. "All of the canned goods collected go directly to the #AEFoodFrenzy, an America East initiative started by Toni Onikeku. I know our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee put a considerable amount of time into making this event come together.
Â
Over 300 student-athletes came out Wednesday night in an effort to raise over $1,000 for the American Heart Association, in addition to collecting 281 canned goods for the conferences #AEFoodyFrenzy to benefit the UMass Lowell Navigators Food Pantry.
Â
The night was highlighted by the second annual talent show put on by SAAC, where each athletic team performed for a chance to take home the Santa Bash crown. Abdullah Kaba (Cumberland, R.I.) and Brian Cherenfant (Taunton, Mass.) of the Men's Track and Field claimed the Santa Bash title, while Women's Track and Field finished second and the Softball team wrapped up the awards with a third pace finish.
Â
"I would like to thank everyone involved including our SAAC members, student-athletes, athletic administrators, as well as some of our sponsors," expressed Anderson. "This event would not have been made possible without their time and contributions. We look forward to hosting this exciting event again in 2017."
