River Hawks Wrap Up Non-Conference Play Against Keene State

LOWELL, Mass. --
The UMass Lowell women's basketball team looks to wrap up 2016 and non-conference play on a positive note, as they host Keene State at 1 p.m. on December 30, as part of the River Hawks' New Year Celebration.

Last Time Out
For the first time all season, the River Hawks had four players reach double-digits, led by Megan Hendrick's (Alexandria, Va.) career-high 20 points. Oda Shackleford (Edinburgh, Ind.) chipped in a personal-best 13, followed by Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) (12 pts) and Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) (11 pts), but UMass Lowell was overmatched in the 73-62 loss at Bryant. Gibbs improved her consecutive games in double figures streak to nine games, and added a career-high seven assists, as well.  

Leading the Flock
In the midst of reaching double-digits in nine consecutive games, Kayla Gibbs leads the team with 12.5 points, and is snagging a team-high 6.8 boards per game, while Tyshay Britten (Norristown, Pa.)has a team-high eight blocks. Asia Mitchell-Owens have 27 total assists to rank atop the team, and Nicole Hayner has dished out 25 helpers. UMass Lowell is shooting at a 38.9 percent clip (213-562) from the field, and connecting on 52-of-185 (28.1%) from three-point range.

Scouting Keene State
The Owls (6-4) have not seen any action since a double-overtime loss to UMass Boston on December 10, snapping a three-game winning streak. Sandi Purcellís 14.8 points per game leads a trio of Owls averaging over 10 points, followed by Lydia Vital (12.9) and Emily McPadden (10.3). Amanda Peetrow controls the glass with 8.4 boards per game, while Vital is facilitating the offense with 2.4 assists. Keene State is shooting 34.9 percent from the field, and at a 29.4 percent clip from beyond the arc.

Hendrick Flying High
After back-to-back career games, the freshman is one of six America East rookies averaging 10 or more points, and is one of four true freshman on the list. 

Streak Ender
With the win against Colgate, UMass Lowell ended three losing steaks in the process, including picking up the program's first overtime win in Division I. The River Hawks ended a four-game skid at the Tsongas and picked up their first win against a new opponent in eight games, dating back to last season.

New Paint Job
The River Hawks scored a season-high 34 points in the paint in the win against Colgate. It marks the fifth time UMass Lowell registered more than 30 in a game this season.

Mid-Game Crisis
UMass Lowell picked up its first win of the campaign when leading at the half against Colgate, the River Hawks are 1-1 in such games.

50 times 5
For only the fifth time in the Division I era, the River Hawks grabbed over 50 rebounds, snagging 52 in the win against Colgate. The single-game high since 2013 is 57, set on January 18, 2015.

Free Points
For the second time this season the River Hawks connected on 20 free throws, going 20-of-34 in the win against Colgate. On December 2, the team went 20-of-22 (90.9%) from the free throw line at Columbia. That was the most free throws UMass Lowell has hit in a single game since going 21-of-26 against UMBC in 2014.

H Squared for Three!
The sharpshooting duo of Megan Hendrick and Nicole Hayner have combined for 48 of UMass Lowell's 60 three-pointers, shooting 36.6 percent from beyond the arc. Hendrick's five triples at Towson were the most in a single contest since Hayner hit five last season against Maine. In 2015-16 Hayner led the team with 46 three-pointers and a 39.7 percentage. She ranked third in the America East with in percentage and fourth in triples made per game with 2.0.

Do You Even Bench?
Through 12 games, the River Hawks' reserves have scored 221 points and have outscored the opponents' bench five times. Last season UMass Lowell's bench scored 341 points, and outscored opponents 12 times. 

Starting Fresh
The River Hawks have used five different starting lineups through the first 12 games of the season.

Spreading the Wealth
The loss against Bryant marked the first time all season that the River Hawks had four players in double figures. Overall, UMass Lowell has had three players with 10 or more point in six games this season. Last season, the River Hawks had 13 games with three or more scorers in double figures. In three of the 13, UMass Lowell had four players with 10 or more points.
