River Hawks Face 62-47 Setback at Holy Cross

Box Score (PDF) | Harris Postgame

WORCESTER, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell (1-9) women's basketball team couldn't put together back-to-back wins, as the Holy Cross Crusaders (2-7) topped the guests, 62-47, Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center.

"I thought we missed an opportunity to battle with a team that is comparable to others in our conference, explained Head Coach Jenerrie Harris. "But credit to them because I thought they came out ready and they were really tough to rebound against. Obviously it would have been nice to have three of our five starters on the floor and not in foul trouble, as we weren't able to have our strongest lineup out there. I'm looking forward to these practices in exam week and getting back into the swing of things."

Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) set a new career high with 11 points, after scoring nine in the second half. With five points in the fourth quarter, Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) extended her streak of consecutive games in double figures to seven contests, and finished the game with 14 points.

Lauren Manis led the Crusaders with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Amy Hasenauer grabbed 10 boards

Despite shooting 44.4 percent in the first quarter, the River Hawks trailed 16-10 after the first quarter. The Crusaders connected on 7-of-11 free throws in the frame and went into the second riding a 6-0 run. Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) was the early offense for the visitors, hitting on two three-pointers.

Holy Cross opened up a 30-16 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the half, behind Manis dropping in seven points in the frame. UMass Lowell's free throw shooting kept them within striking distance, as the team connected on six free throws in the final 3:21 of the half to pull within 30-20 with 74 seconds left in the first half.

After outscoring UMass Lowell, 19-10, in the third quarter the Crusaders held a 50-31 advantage into the final period.

Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) topped her season high with six assists on the afternoon, with five coming in the first half.

The River Hawks are back in action on December 18, when they host the Colgate Raiders at 1 p.m. at the Tsongas Center.
