LOWELL, Mass. -- Following a pair of road contests, the UMass Lowell women's basketball team returns home to take on the Rhode Island Rams at the Tsongas Center on November 29, before heading to New York City to matchup against the Columbia Lions on December 2.
Last Time Out
In her first career start,
Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) tied her career high with 15 points, and
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) recorded her eighth career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in UMass Lowell's 66-56 loss at Boston University.
Markayla Sherman (Cincinnati, Ohio) added a career-high 12 points and
Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) tied her personal best with eight, but the River Hawks saw the Terriers use a 9-0 run that stretched from the first quarter into the second, to build a lead they would never relinquish.Â
Leading the Flock
Freshman Hendrick leads the squad with 9.7 points per game, and Gibbs has 9.3 points. Gibbs and
Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) are both grabbing 5.8 boards per contest, and
Tyshay Britten (Norristown, Pa.) has a team-high five blocks.
Shawnkia McCallum (Perry Hall, Md.) and
Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) both have recorded 14 total assists to rank atop the team. UMass Lowell is shooting at a 39.2 percent clip (112-286) from the field, and is fourth in the conference from beyond the arc, going 28-90 (31.1%).
Scouting Rhode Island
The Rams (3-3) enter the contest on a two-game winning steak, following their 72-65 win at Fairfield on November 23. Charise Wilson paces the offense with 16.2 points per game, and leads the team with 6.5 rebounds and 35 assists. In support Dina Motrechuk has netted 8.8 points per game and leads the team with 14 blocks. As a unit, Rhode Island is shooting 40.5 percent (141-348) from the floor and is 37-of-132 (28%) from beyond the arc.
Scouting Columbia
The Lions (3-2) head to Maryland to take on the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds before hosting the River Hawks in the school's Field Trip Day. The duo of Camille Zimmerman and Tori Oliver power Columbia, behind the pair's 19.4 and 14.2 points per game, respectively. Zimmerman also leads the team with 12.4 rebounds and nine blocks, and her 14 assists are second to Paulina Koerner's 17. The Lions have connected on 38.1 percent of their shots (117-307) and are 28-of-91 (28.6%) from three-point range.Â
Series History
The Rams hold a 3-0 series lead over the River Hawks, following last season's 72-64 win. Columbia and UMass Lowell have split both of their contests, with the Lions coming out on top, 67-57, in 2015.
Ain't No Party Like a Tsongas Center Party
The River Hawks are 6-6 all-time in games played at the Tsongas Center, with a 4-5 record in the Division I era. Last season, the loss against Binghamton snapped UMass Lowell's four-game winning streak in the building, scoring 71.7 points per game in the steak. Overall, the River Hawks are averaging 66.9 points in the team's second home.
H Squared for Three!
The sharpshooting duo of Hendrick and Hayner have combined for 21 of UMass Lowell's 28 three-pointers, shooting 37.5 percent from beyond the arc. Hendrick's five triples at Towson were the most in a single contest since Hayner hit five last season against Maine. In 2015-16 Hayner led the team with 46 three-pointers and a 39.7 percentage. She ranked third in the America East with in percentage and fourth in triples made per game with 2.0.

Through five games, the River Hawks'Â reserves have scored 117 points and have outscored their opponents'Â bench three times. The trio of

Shawnkia McCallum are leading the charge with 81 points. Last season the River Hawks' bench scored 341 points, and outscored opponents 12 times.Â
Triple Threat
UMass Lowell is now connecting at a 31.1 percent clip to sit in fourth in the America East. The River Hawk have led the conference in three-point shooting the past two seasons, including 33.6 percent last season.
Spreading the Wealth
The contest against BU marked the first time all season that UMass Lowell had three players with 10 or more points. Last season, the River Hawks had 13 games with three or more scorers in double figures. In three of the 13, UMass Lowell had four players with 10 or more points.Â
