COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) led the UMass Lowell (0-2) women's basketball team with a game-high 17 points, but the No. 6 Maryland Terrapins prevailed 100-44, on Sunday afternoon.
"Maryland played really wel today and showed why they are always a top-ranked team," commented Head Coach
Jenerrie Harris. "We played much better in the second half, limiting turnovers and getting scoring opportunities. Asia and Nikki did a great job out there and didn't let anything get them down and played with heart the entire game."
The Terrapins jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the first quarter before
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) knocked down the River Hawks first field goal of the tilt. Maryland used a 17-0 run to end the quarter and take a 34-5 advantage into the second.
Kiana Batagelj (Hamilton, Ontario) connected on her first basket as a River Hawk, a three-pointer in the second period. She led UMass Lowell at the half with three points, and a handful of players each had two for the visitors.
To begin the second half, Hayner recorded two quick threes and sparked a 5-0 River Hawk run to get within 68-27.
Katherine Smith (Canterbury, Ind.) added a conventional three-point play and Batagelj knocked down her second triple of the afternoon.
The River Hawks scored 14 points in each quarter of the second half, and Hayner added nine in the final period.
The hosts had five players record double figures, and were led by Destiny Slocum's 15 points and Kailia Charles' double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
