River Hawks Clash with Pair of America East Foes This Week

The UMass Lowell field hockey team will clash with a pair of America East Conference foes this week beginning with a 7 p.m. tilt against New Hampshire on Friday, October 7, and followed by a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee at Vermont on Oct. 9.
 
Food Frenzy
Friday's game is part of the second annual America East Food Frenzy. The AE Food Frenzy is a collaboration between all nine America East institutions and was developed by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The initiative provides significant donations to several charities and campus communities. Looking at UMass Lowell
UMass Lowell owns a 4-6 overall record in 2016, including a 0-1 mark in America East action, after splitting a pair of decisions last week. The River Hawks first battled to a 4-2 loss at home against No. 20 Maine in their league opener on September 30 before picking up a 5-0 shutout victory at Sacred Heart on Oct. 2. So far in 2016, freshman Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) paces UMass Lowell with 17 points and five assists. Sophomore Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) and junior Christa Doiron (Worcester, Mass.), who are tied for the team lead with seven goals apiece, add 16 and 15 total points, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Federico (Windham, N.H.) has eight of the nine games she has appeared in, compiling a 2-6 record with 46 saves and a .639 save percentage. Freshman keeper Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) boasts 27 saves and two wins in six appearances, as well.
 
Scouting New Hampshire
The Wildcats, who are currently 3-7 overall and 1-1 in America East games, fell, 4-0, against UAlbany on Sept. 30 before defeating Vermont, 3-1, on Oct. 2. Lindsey Nerbonne is first on the team with 15 points, and is tied with Ashley Mendonca for the team lead with seven goals. Gianna Bensaia adds with seven assists, while goalkeeper Kelsey Rudert has started 10 games with 46 saves and a .597 save percentage.
  
Scouting Vermont
The Catamonts currently sit at 6-5 in 2016 season, after facing a 3-1 setback in their America East opener against New Hampshire on Oct. 2. The squad will host UAlbany on Oct. 7 before welcoming UMass Lowell to Burlington. Through 11 games, Landon Warren has tallied a team-best eight goals for 16 total points. Carla Godsman chips in with 11 points and Lauren Tucker is first on the squad with four assists. Goalkeeper Lena Benwood totals 76 saves with a .704 save percentage.
 
Series History
UMass Lowell will look for its first win against New Hampshire on Friday, as the Wildcats lead the all-time series, 4-0. The teams met twice last season with UNH earning a pair of hard-fought, one-goal games, including a 4-3 overtime decision on Oct. 30, 2015 in Lowell. Sunday's contest marks the 15th meeting between the River Hawks and Vermont in the sport of field hockey. The Catamounts own an 11-2-1 advantage in the all-timer series that dates back to 1986. UVM picked up a 4-1 win when the teams last met on Oct. 25, 2015 in Lowell.
 
Around the League
This season, the River Hawks are fifth in the AE East Division standings. As a team, UMass Lowell sits third in the rankings with a 3.20 scoring average and 33 goals scored. The squad is also ranked fourth with 2.20 assists per game and leading the league with 7.40 saves per game. Individually, Anouk Lalande (1.70) and Torrie Huk (1.60) are fifth and seventh, respectively, for points per game. Additionally, Huk and Christa Doiron are tied for eighth with seven goals. Kelsey Federico (5.11) is third on the saves per game list, while Eva Berkhout is first in the conference with a .771 save percentage.
 
Helping Hands
The River Hawks' offensive output has been a real team effort this year, with 22 assists on 33 goals so far in 2016. That means 66.7 percent of the squad's goals have been assisted this season.
 
Making History
The River Hawks set two Division I program records with their 9-2 win against Saint Louis on Sept. 18. The performance marked the most goals in a game and the largest margin of victory for the team since a 2012 contest against Franklin Pierce (9-1).
