LOWELL, Mass. – The No. 5 UMass Lowell Hockey team (3-0-2) boasted five different goal scorers as the River Hawks soared past No. 13 St. Lawrence, 5-2, in non-conference play on Friday night at the Tsongas Center in front of 5,340 fans on the opening night of Homecoming Weekend.
 
"I was most pleased with our ability to manage the special teams tonight because there were a lot of them," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "the guys had a great second period despite a couple calls not going our way tonight, but we had some very timely penalty kills and had a great third period. I thought the third period was reminiscent of a lot of efforts of last year at the Tsongas Center and hopefully we can build of that."
 
Senior forward Joe Gambardella (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded his first shorthanded goal of the season, while freshman goaltender Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) posted 11 saves to improve to 3-0-1 on the year.
 
Junior forward John Edwardh (Calgary, Alberta) was awarded the game-winning goal as his second period tally broke the 2-2 tie that propelled the River Hawks to another victory.
 
A St. Lawrence turnover in the neutral zone and a two-on-one opportunity for the River Hawks paved the way for sophomore forward Ryan Dmowski (Lyme, Conn.) to break open the scoring just three minutes into the game, as UMass Lowell jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
 
After matching penalties in 15th minute, the two squads were forced to send out their special team units for play four-on-four play. UMass Lowell extended their lead to 2-0 when junior defenseman Tyler Mueller (Regina, Sask.) picked up his first goal of the season with a deflection from defensive partner Mattias Gorransson (Slottsbron, Sweden).
 
The Saints weren't quiet for long, as St. Lawrence stormed back scoring two goals just 43 seconds apart at 14:26 and 15:09 in the first frame. Forward Carson Gicewicz cut the deficit to 2-1 after firing a slap shot past Wall before defenseman Matt Purmal followed with his own tally to knot the score 2-2.
 
Thanks to a two goal second period by the River Hawks, UMass Lowell would gain a lead they would fail to relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Both goals for the squad game short-handed as Edwardh and Gambardella netted UMass Lowell's third and fourth goals, respectively, of the night.
 
UMass Lowell continued its consistent offensive pressure as they notched their fifth goal of the night in the first three minutes of the final period. Junior Gage Hough (Omaha, Neb.) became the squads fifth and final goal scorer of the night when he sent a wrist shot past the Saints goaltender and into the back of the net, securing the 5-2 win.
 
The River Hawks went on to outshoot the Saints 38-13 in the tilt, while the penalty kill unit went a perfect 8-for-8 on the night.
 
UMass Lowell returns to its home ice on Saturday, October 22 against Clarkson at 7:05 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend from the Tsongas Center.
