River Hawks Falter in Second Half, Drop 3-0 Decision at Maine

ORONO, Maine – The UMass Lowell field hockey team (7-8, 2-3 AE) allowed a trio of second-half goals, as America East opponent Maine (11-5, 4-1) earned the 3-0 decision in Orono on Thursday.

"With the first half being so evenly matched, we intended to come out in the second half and take care of our opportunities," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "But intentions aren't good enough in this tough conference. We gave up too many corners in the second half and did not counter by earning any of our own. It's disappointing to lose, but more disappointing to be shut out by a team that we scored two goals against two weeks ago."

Senior Georgia Cowderoy (Ashmore, Queensland, Australia) and junior Katie Luchino (Freehold, N.J.) paced the River Hawks with two shots apiece, while junior Christa Doiron (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) each added one of their own. Freshman goalkeeper Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) tallied nine saves in the complete-game performance.

The River Hawks and Black Bears played evenly matched in the first half, battling through 35 minutes of scoreless action and registering five shots apiece. The visitors, who controlled the tempo for the majority of the period, had a good chance in the 25th minute when they forced the opposing keeper to step out of position and Cowderoy fired a shot on target. However, Maine's Casey Crowley stepped in the way to make the defensive save.

The Black Bears took control of the momentum coming out of halftime, recording the first seven shots of the second. The home team broke the 0-0 stalemate in the 41st minute, as Ella Mosky found the back of the cage off of a rebound.

Huk sent a shot wide for the River Hawks before the Libby Riedl was able to score a pair of goals in the next nine minutes, including a tip in off an initial shot by Danielle Aviani, to seal the 3-0 outcome.

Thursday's contest marked the 11th meeting ever between UMass Lowell and Maine in the sport of field hockey. The Black Bears now own a 9-1-1 advantage in the all-time series. The River Hawks will remain on the road this weekend, visiting New Hampshire on Sunday, October 23 for a 1 p.m. tilt.
