River Hawks Take to the Road for Pair of AE Matchups

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell field hockey team will hit the road for a pair of America East Conference matchups this week. The squad first travels to Maine on Thursday, October 20 for a 3 p.m. tilt before visiting New Hampshire on Sunday, October 23 at 1 p.m.
 
Looking at UMass Lowell
UMass Lowell has won four of its last five games to improve to 7-7 overall in 2016, including 2-2 in America East action. The squad split a pair of decisions last week, as the River Hawks were handed a 4-0 loss by UAlbany on Oct. 14 before they earned a 7-1 victory against Lehigh on Senior Day on Oct. 16. So far in 2016, junior Christa Doiron (Worcester, Mass.) paces UMass Lowell with 10 goals and 24 points. Sophomore Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) and freshman Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) follow closely with 23 points each. Lalande has also chipped in with a team-best seven assists. Freshman goalkeeper Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) boasts a 5-1 record on the year, compiling 52 saves, a .765 save percentage and a 2.12 goals against average. Junior keeper Kelsey Federico (Windham, N.H.), who has started eight of the 10 games she has appeared in, totals 50 saves with a .658 save percentage.
 
Scouting Maine
The Black Bears, who are currently 10-5 overall and 3-1 in America East play, went 1-1 last week after defeating Vermont, 3-2, on Oct. 14 and falling, 3-1, against California on Oct. 16. Casey Crowley leads the team with 25 total points, while Madison Cummings adds a team-best 11 goals. Libby Riedl and Ella Mosky are tied for first on the squad with nine assists each. Emma Cochran has started eight of 15 games played en route to a 6-3 record. She has registered 25 saves and a .625 save percentage.
 
Scouting New Hampshire
The Wildcats currently sit at 4-10 in 2016 season with a 2-3 America East mark. UNH dropped a 2-1 decision at Boston College on Oct. 14 before defeating UAlbany, 2-1, on Oct. 16. The squad is set to host Vermont on Oct. 21 before welcoming the River Hawks to Durham. Through 14 games, Ashley Mendonca is first on the team with 10 goals for 20 points. Gianna Bensaia adds a team-high 12 assists, while goalkeeper Kelsey Rudert has started all 14 games with 69 saves and a .639 save percentage.
 
Series History
UMass Lowell and Maine will be meeting for the 11th time in a series that dates back to 1985. The Black Bears, who lead the all-time series, 8-1-1, defeated the River Hawks, 4-3, when they met in Lowell earlier this season on September 30. UMass Lowell earned its first win ever against the Wildcats on Oct. 7 of this year to move the all-time series between the clubs to 4-1 in favor of UNH.  
 
Around the League
This season, the River Hawks sit third in the AE East Division standings behind UAlbany and Maine. As a team, UMass Lowell is third in the rankings with a 3.15 scoring average and 3.21 goals scored per game. The squad is also ranked fourth with 2.50 assists per game and first in the league with 7.36 saves per game. Individually, Christa Doiron (24), Torrie Huk (23) and Anouk Lalande (23) are fifth and tied for sixth, respectively, for total points. Additionally, Doiron is ranked sixth with 10 goals. Eva Berkhout (5.20) and Kelsey Federico (5.00) are back-to-back on the saves per game list in fourth and fifth place, while Berkhout is leading the conference with a .765 save percentage.
 
Helping Hands
The River Hawks' offensive output has been a real team effort this year, with 35 assists on 45 goals so far in 2016. That means 77.8 percent of the squad's goals have been assisted this season.
 
Making History
The River Hawks continue to set new Division I program records in 2016. In their 9-2 win against Saint Louis on Sept. 18, the team recorded its most goals in a game and the largest margin of victory since a 2012 contest against Franklin Pierce (9-1). More recently, the squad picked up its first win ever against America East opponent New Hampshire, in addition to notching their most league victories (2) since joining the conference back in 2013. With seven victories so far in 2016, UMass Lowell has already secured its winningest season at the Division I level.
