LOWELL, Mass. – The No. 19 UMass Lowell (7-0-2, 0-0-1) men's soccer team pushed their unbeaten streak to nine games following a 1-1 draw against Binghamton (5-2-4, 0-0-1) in both teams' America East opener on Saturday evening.
Â
"It's a difficult result to go up in the second half and concede a late goal," said Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "We have to find a way to win and play the full 90 minutes. We came close tonight but 89 minutes and 30 seconds won't cut it in this conference."
Â
The River Hawks held on 1-0 lead in the final minutes, but with 27 seconds left in the second half, Kevin Flesch headed home a Charlie Novoth cross to knot up the game for Binghamton.
Â
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) notched his seventh goal of the season in the 73rd minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) sent in the pass to Fernandes at the top of the 18-yard box and after one touch the senior curled the ball past the goalie and into the right corner.
Â
UMass Lowell outshot the visitors 16-11, including a 6-0 advantage in the second overtime.
Ivan Abramovic (Zagreb, Croatia) sent in a header off a corner that was knocked off the line at the last second by a Bearcat defender.
Â
Both keepers made one save each in the first period,
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) finished the contest with four stops, while Alejandro Cubillo registered three.
Â
The River Hawks had the best opportunity of the first half when
Ivan Abramovic (Zagreb, Croatia) sent a header into the back of the net from just the penalty spot, but was called offside in the 7th minute.
Â
Binghamton registered the only shot on target of the first half in the 12th minute, but the hosts held a 5-2 advantage in shots and earned three of the contest's four corners of the first half.
Â
UMass Lowell returns to conference action on October 8 with a road tilt at UMBC, scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
