LOWELL, Mass. – Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, but the UMass Lowell (3-10, 0-2) fell in its America East home opener, 64-50, to the Stony Brook Seawolves, on Saturday afternoon.
"I thought we did a good job preparing for this game and did a good job executing our offensive game plan we had coming in," said Head Coach
Jenerrie Harris." At the end of the day we didn't do enough adjustments as the game went on to come out on top. I thought we needed to do a better job finding ways to score points and turning the ball over less. We were right there and just a few things here and there defensively and offensively will help us as we move through conference play."
The River Hawks used a fast start to take a 13-4 lead after the first quarter of the contest.
Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) opened the scoring with a three-pointer, and
Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) used a nifty baseline spin to beat the shot clock and give the River Hawks a 5-4 advantage with 7:17 on the clock.
Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) hit her first long ball of the afternoon, and Doucette scored the last five points of the quarter to build up a 13-4 lead with 2:54 left in the period.
The Seawolves opened the second on a 15-4 run to take a 19-17 lead with 5:26 on the clock until halftime. Doucette ended the run to knot up the score at 19-19, 20 seconds later, but Stony Brook answered to regain the lead at 21-19.
After
Lauren Parra (Islip, N.Y.) tied the score a 21-21, Stony Brook scored six straight, with four from Elizabeth Manner, to take a 27-21 lead. Down 29-23, Mitchell-Owens drilled a three with 11 seconds left to bring the River Hawks within 29-26 as the teams headed into the intermission.
With eight points from four different scorers, the River Hawks drew even at 34-34 with 5:47 left in the third quarter.
Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) opened up the scoring, and Mitchell-Owens used a hard drive in the hole to knot up the game.
The visitors rode a 10-3 run to take a 44-37 lead, but Doucette scored her 17th point with six seconds left in the quarter, to trim the deficit to 44-39 heading into the final period.
Frase knocked down a three with 1:57 left in regulation for her 501st career point, bringing the River Hawks within 60-50.
Doucette's 21 points marked the 10th game in a row that she has scored 10 or more points, including 20 or more points three times. Hayner chipped in 11 points, and Mitchell-Owens dished out a game-high three assists.
The Seawolves had three scorers in double figures, led by Brittany Snow's 17 points. Davion Wingate netted 15 and Manner added 12 points. Aaliyah Worley recorded three helpers.
The River Hawks return to the road, taking on Maine on January 13 at 7 p.m.
