River Hawks Host Stony Brook in America East Home Opener

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell women's basketball team hosts the Stony Brook Seawolves in the squad's America East home opener on January 9 at 2 p.m.

Kids will have a chance to build snowflakes with Queen Elsa as the River Hawks host Frozen Day.

Looking at the River Hawks
The River Hawks dropped their America East opener, 72-59, at Hartford on January 6. Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) led the way with 17 points and nine rebounds, also recording four assists and two steals. Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) tied her season high with 15 points and Asia Mitchell-Owens added 14 points. Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) came within one assist of tying her career high, dishing out seven against the Hawks.

Leading the Flock
The UMass Lowell offense is led by four players averaging double-digits this season. Doucette is leading the way with 14.2 points, and snagging 9.5 rebounds per game. Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) is scoring 12.8 points per game with 8.3 rebounds, while Mitchell-Owens is scoring 10.5 points. Hayner rounds out the group with 10.4 points per game, connecting on 34 percent (17-50) of her three-point attempts. Frase leads the team with 34 assists to facilitate the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has eight blocks and 17 steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 296-of-761 (38.9%) from the field and 32.6 percent (74-227) from three-point range.

Scouting Stony Brook
Stony Brook enters Saturday's contest 9-5 overall, 1-0 AE, and currently riding a five-game win streak, after winning the squad's lone contest last week. The Seawolves came from behind to top conference foe Binghamton, 64-58, on Jan. 6. Senior Brittany Snow is first on the team netting 16.5 points per game, while freshman Ogechi Anyagaligbo sits close with 11.6 points. Anyagaligbo is posting a team-best 13 blocks and 10.7 boards, while junior Christa Scognamiglio has posted a team-high 27 steals. As a team, Stony Brook is netting 62.8 points per game, while shooting 40.6 percent (317-780) from the field, including 23.0 percent (48-209) from downtown. The Seawolves are holding a 3.6 scoring margin over their opponents, while tacking on a 7.9 rebounding margin so far this season.

Series History
The series is tied 6-6, with the Seawolves winning the last five games, including all four meetings in America East play.

Conference Call
Entering their third year of America East play, the River Hawks are looking to improve on their 7-9, sixth place finish last season. UMass Lowell is 0-3 in Division I conference openers, but went 4-4 last season in home conference games, including winning the home opener. The River Hawks also have won three of their last four conference home games.

Always a Threat from Deep
As a unit, the River Hawks led the league shooting 32.6 percent from downtown, and are third averaging 5.7 makes per game. Last season, UMass Lowell led the league in three-point shooting with a 33.2 3FG% and averaged 6.8 makes per game.

Balling in the America East
The River Hawks lead the conference with a .746 free throw percentage, and sit in third averaging 62.1 points and 13.1 offensive rebounds per game. The team ranks fourth in the conference with 11.9 assists per game, and fourth in rebounding margin (+0.9).

Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) made her debut at Fairleigh Dickinson and scored eight points … Doucette's 17 rebounds against FIU is the second-best single game performance in the America East this season … Nazarae Butler (Columbus, Ohio) and Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made first collegiate starts at Rhode Island … Frase snagged her 100th and 101st career rebounds against Columbia … Butler and Smith made their collegiate debuts against No. 6 Maryland.
