River Hawks Get America East Slate Underway at Hartford

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team will open up its third year in America East play with a road contest at Hartford on January 6 at 7 p.m.

Looking at the River Hawks
The River Hawks fell to Massachusetts, 84-58, on December 30 in the non-conference finale. Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) led the way with her fourth double-double of the season (16 pts, 10 rebs). Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) chipped in 13 points and grabbed eight boards. Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) and Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) added 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Mitchell-Owens tied a career-high with seven assists

Leading the Flock
The UMass Lowell offense is led by a trio of players averaging double-digits this season, Doucette is leading the way with 13.9 points, and snagging 9.6 rebounds per game. Gibbs is scoring 13.3 points per game with 8.3 rebounds, while Mitchell-Owens is scoring 10.3 points and leading the team with 32 assists to facilitate the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has eight blocks and 15 steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 273-of-704 (38.8%) from the field and 32.0 percent (66-206) from three-point range.

Scouting Hartford
The Hawks are riding a six-game losing streak following their 66-46 defeat at Florida Gulf Coast on January 2. Hartford has not won a game since Dec. 2, a 49-41 decision against Central Connecticut. Deanna Mayza is leading the offense with 12.6 points per game and 48 assists. Alyssa Reaves and La'Trice Hall are controlling the glass for the Hawks, grabbing 5.2 and 5.1 rebounds per game, respectively. Reaves has also recorded seven blocks to lead the team. As a unit, Hartford is shooting 33.2 percent (235-708) from the field and 67-of-219 (30.6%) from three-point range.

Series History
The Hawks lead the series, 3-1. UMass Lowell defeated Hartford for the first time last season, 65-62, on Feb. 14.

Conference Call
Entering their third year of America East play, the River Hawks are looking to improve on their 7-9, sixth place finish last season. UMass Lowell is 0-2 in Division I conference openers, but is riding a two-game conference win streak.

Always a Threat from Deep
As a unit, the River Hawks led the league hooting 32.0 percent from downtown, and are third averaging 5.5 makes per game. Last season, UMass Lowell led the league in three-point shooting with a 33.2 3FG% and averaged 6.8 makes per game.

Balling in the America East
The River Hawks lead the conference with a .751 free throw percentage, and sit in third averaging 62.3 points and second with 13.3 offensive rebounds per game. The team ranks fifth in the conference with 11.8 assists per game, and fifth in rebounding margin (+1.0).

Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) made her debut at Fairleigh Dickinson and scored eight points … Doucette's 17 rebounds against FIU is the second-best single game performance in the America East this season … Nazarae Butler (Columbus, Ohio) and Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made first collegiate starts at Rhode Island … Frase snagged her 100th and 101st career rebounds against Columbia … Butler and Smith made their collegiate debuts against No. 6 Maryland.
