River Hawks Hold Tsongas Doubleheader with Binghamton

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell women's basketball team begins a three-game home stand, hosting the Binghamton Bearcats in a Tsongas Center doubleheader at 11 a.m. on January 24.

Looking at the River Hawks
Down 43-33 heading into the fourth quarter, the River Hawks scored 28 points to cut the deficit to 64-61 with 12 seconds on the clock, but the New Hampshire Wildcats iced the game and held on for the 65-61 victory. Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) dropped a career-high 19 points, 12 in the fourth, and Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) added 18. Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards. UMass Lowell outrebounded its opponent for the 12th time this season, grabbing 40 to UNH's 31.

Leading the Flock
The UMass Lowell offense is led by a trio of players averaging double-digits this season. Doucette is leading the way with 13.6 points, and 8.8 rebounds per game. Gibbs is scoring 12.4 points per game with 8.6 rebounds, while Hayner is scoring 10.6 points. Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.)  is connecting on 40.0 percent (28-70) of her three-point attempts, and Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.)  has dished out 49 assists to facilitate the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has 12 blocks and 19 steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 389-of-1017 (38.2%) from the field and 31.7 percent (95-300) from three-point range.

Scouting Binghamton
Binghamton enters Sunday's contest 8-10 overall and 3-2 in America East action after splitting a pair of decisions last week. The Bearcats fell, 59-47, on the road at Albany on Jan. 18, before bouncing back to take down Vermont, 57-53, at home on Jan. 21. Through 18 games, sophomore Alyssa James is pacing the squad notching 16.7 points per game, while classmate Imani Watkins trails closely behind, averaging 16.6 points. James also leads the squad in rebounds per game (8.7) and blocks (57), while Watkins is putting up a team-best 82 assists, and 42 steals. As a team, Binghamton is putting up 58.6 points per game, while averaging 37.7 percent (390-1046) from the field, including 30.7 from long range, and 69.0 percent (196-284) from the free throw line. The Bearcats are pulling in 35.5 boards a game, while posting 12.1 helpers and forcing 9.3 steals per game.

Series History
The series is knotted up at 4-4. The River Hawks are looking to win their second consecutive game in the series for the second time after their 66-49 win last February.

Ain't No Party Like a Tsongas Center Party
The River Hawks are 6-3 all-time in games played at the Tsongas Center, with a 4-2 record in the Division I era. UMass Lowell is riding a four-game winning streak in the building, scoring 71.7 points per game in the steak. Overall, the River Hawks are averaging 68.8 points in the teamís second home.

Always a Threat from Deep
As a unit, the River Hawks are leading the league shooting 31.7 percent from downtown, and are third averaging 5.3 makes per game. Last season, UMass Lowell led the league in three-point shooting with a 33.2 3FG% and averaged 6.8 makes per game.

Balling in the America East
The River Hawks lead the conference with 13.2 offensive rebounds per game, and are tied for first with a 74.5 free throw percentage. UMass Lowell is fourth averaging 58.8 points and seventh with 10.9 assists per game. The team sits in third with a rebounding margin of +2.3.

Spreading the Wealth
The River Hawks have had 10 games with three or more scorers in double figures. In three of the nine, UMass Lowell has had four players with 10 or more points.

Controlling the Glass
The River Hawks have outrebounded their opponents in 12 games, including a five-game streak from November 28-December 9. UMass Lowell held a 41.8 (209) to 33.2 (166) advantage throughout the run.
