River Hawks Make Trek to New Hampshire for AE Clash

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team makes the trek to New Hampshire to take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m. on January 21.

Looking at the River Hawks
Trailing 43-35 in the fourth quarter the River Hawks used a 6-2 run to cut the Vermont lead to 45-41. With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Asia Mitchell-Owens drilled a three to trim the gap to 49-48. After Vermont went a perfect 6-of-6 from the line, Nicole Hayner kept hope alive with a three, making the score 55-51 with less than 40 clicks left. The Catamounts scored the final four points and hung on for the 59-51 victory. Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) recorded her fourth double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) scored a team-high 16 points off the bench.

Leading the Flock
The UMass Lowell offense is led by a trio of players averaging double-digits this season. Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) is leading the way with 13.4 points, and 8.9 rebounds per game.vGibbs is scoring 12.5 points per game with 8.5 rebounds, while Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) is scoring 10.0 points. Mitchell-Owens is connecting on 40.6 percent (28-69) of her three-point attempts, and Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) has dished out 44 assists to facilitate the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has 11 blocks and 19 steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 365-of-966 (37.8%) from the field and 31.0 percent (88-284) from three-point range.

Scouting New Hampshire
New Hampshire enters Thursday's contest 6-11 overall and 0-4 in America East action, as the squad is currently riding a nine game losing streak. The Wildcats fell on the road at Stony Brook, 54-63, on Jan. 16, before coming back home and dropping a 62-52 decision to Maine on Jan. 18. Through 17 games, senior Elizabeth Belanger leads the squad in points (16.2) and rebounds per game (6.9), and steals with 24. Carlie Pogue is pacing the team with 12 blocks, while sitting second on the team, averaging 10.9 points and 5.1 boards. As a team, the Wildcats are netting 58.41 points per game, while shooting 38.3 percent (351-918) from the field, including 27.5 percent (58-211) from long range. New Hampshire has forced 107 steals on the season, while averaging 36.9 rebounds per game.

Series History
The Wildcats lead the series, 4-1, 3-1 in the teams' Division I era. UMass Lowell won the last meeting between the squads, 70-56, on Feb. 21, 2015.

Always a Threat from Deep
As a unit, the River Hawks are second in the league shooting 31.0 percent from downtown, and are third averaging 5.2 makes per game. Last season, UMass Lowell led the league in three-point shooting with a 33.2 3FG% and averaged 6.8 makes per game.

The River Hawks lead the conference with 13.2 offensive rebounds per game, and are second with a74.8 free throw percentage. UMass Lowell is sixth averaging 58.6 points and 10.9 assists per game. The team sits in fourth with a rebounding margin of +1.9.
