LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team returns home for the holiday weekend for two games, taking on the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday, January 16 at 1 p.m.
Looking at the River HawksThe River Hawks fell to the Maine Black Bears, 74-44, on Jan. 13 dropping to 0-3 in America East play.
Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) drained a corner three-pointer at the buzzer of the first quarter to give the River Hawks an 11-7 lead, but the hosts outscored UMass Lowell, 25-4, in the second period to take control.
Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, N.H.) scored 10 points, extending her double digit streak to 11 consecutive games.
Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) made her first career start and snagged a career-high seven rebounds. Hayner finished with a team-high 13 points, and
Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) added 10 as well.
Leading the FlockThe UMass Lowell offense is led by a trio of players averaging double-digits this season. Doucette is leading the way with 14.3 points, and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) is scoring 12.8 points per game with 8.3 rebounds, while Hayner is scoring 10.7 points.
Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) is connecting on 41.0 percent (25-61) of her three-point attempts, and has dished out 39 assists to facilitate the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has 11 blocks and 19 steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 334-of-868 (38.5%) from the field and 32.0 percent (82-256) from three-point range.
Scouting UMBCThe Retrievers, in the midst of a three-game losing streak, come into the weekend's matchup at 10-7 overall and 1-3 in the America East. Three players lead the offense while averaging double figures, led by Pandora Wilson's 12.5 points per game. Taylor McCarley and Capree Garner round out the trio with 11.9 and 10.5 points, respectively. Wilson also controls the glass for UMBC, grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game. McCarley has dished out 84 assists on the year, good for 4.9 per game and has registered 40 steals. As a squad, the Retrievers are shooting 35.2 percent (352-1001) from the field and 72-of-257 (28%) from beyond the arc.
