WORCESTER, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Women's Soccer team tried to play catch up, Tuesday night, but still ended up on the short end of a 4-2 loss to Holy Cross at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.

The River Hawks got goals from junior Erin Scanlon (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Lauren Aldrich (Southampton, Mass.) but it proved to be too little and far too late.

The loss drops the UMass Lowell record to 0-4-0. The Crusaders pick up their first win of the year to move to 1-3-1.

The home team dictated the tempo of play in the early stages of the first half and the result was the game's first goal. That came in the 17th minute of play, Courtney Cohen tapped home a goal mouth cross from Stephanie Lund for the 1-0 lead.

Holy Cross had a 5-1 shooting edge at the half and it was indicative of play in the first 45-minutes. Whatever promise the second half held, it quickly evaporated.

Emily George added to the Holy Cross lead tucking the ball into the left corner on a penalty kick in the 51st minute of play. The goal proved to spur the home team on. Christina Callahan and Allie Neumann added goals in the 59th and 69th minutes of play respectively.

Erin Scanlon broke the spell and put the River Hawks on the board in the 76-minute of play. She drilled the ball into the back of the net from 18 yards out following a strong run. It was her first goal of the season and the second of her career. It also came with her sister Jenna watching from the Holy Cross bench.

Lauren Aldrich added a final marker for the River Hawks in the 84th minute of play. She beat the keeper from a poor angle on the right wing from about 25 yards away.

Holy Cross outshot UMass Lowell 16-9 and on target 13-4. Freshman goalkeeper Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) made seven saves. Junior Meghan LaPointe (Ludlow, Mass.) making her collegiate debut stopped both shots she saw. Crusader keeper Emma Gurchiek made two saves.

Holy Cross had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

The River Hawks return to action and the friendly surroundings of the Cushing Field Complex on Friday September 11, 4:00 p.m., when they host Lafayette.
