BOSTON, Mass. – A second half goal was the different as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (5-4) dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to the Boston University Terriers (5-2-1), Wednesday night.
"I thought BU was a strong team, and at the end of the day it comes down to opportunities lost," said Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "I think we had the better chances that we didn't convert and did a good job making chances, but it just comes down to efficiency and we're not getting as many balls on frame as we should. We gave up two chances, one dangerous one, and at this level that's all it takes."
Boston University took its only lead in the 51st minute when David Amirani's shot from the left side of the 18-yard box was deflected, and found its way into the opposite corner past
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.).
After the first 45 minutes, both teams were tied 0-0 with the River Hawks holding a 6-5 advantage in shots, but the hosts had four corner kicks to the guests none. Kroll stopped the only shot that tested him, his first of two saves on the night.
The best chance for either side in the scoreless first half came in the 30th minute when
Edward Venta-Yepes (Lowell, Mass.) had his point blank shot turned aside by Matt Gilbert.
After going down 1-0, UMass Lowell kept the pressure on, forcing Terriers' keeper Matt Gilbert to make key saves down the stretch, including on a one-on-one opportunity in the 75th minute.
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) let a high floating shot from 30-yards out that beat Gilbert, but hit the left post and stayed out of the net.
Fernandes has a game-high six shots, and Venta-Yepes added five of his own, including a game-high two on target.
The River Hawks are back in action on October 3, Alumni Day, entertaining New Hampshire to open America East play at 3 p.m.
