ALBANY, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell baseball team split a twin bill against Albany on Saturday, taking the opener 11-4, before having the script flipped in a 13-2 loss at Varsity Field in the second game.
Â
In the opener, freshman Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) struck out a season-high seven to pick up his second straight win, and improve to 2-1. Ryan got help from senior Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) who had three RBI to lead the River Hawks (13-23, 9-7) while three more knocked in two RBI each. The Great Danes (13-21, 6-7) scored 10 runs off starter Kevin Veilleux (Manchester, N.H.) through three innings en route to the game two victory.
Â
The River Hawks scored on a double from Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) in the first and single from Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) in the second to take a 2-1 lead. After failing to score a run in the third, the River Hawks scored a run in the fourth through six, before a five-run seventh.
Â
Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) and Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) singled in a run each before the visiting River Hawks plated another run when DeGroot drew a walk with the bases loaded. Ricoy delivered a two RBI single to left to wrap up the scoring in the frame.
Â
Also knocking in two RBI for the visiting River Hawks in the opener was Kelly Rooney (Upton, Mass.) and Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.).
Â
The Great Danes bounced back in the second game by scoring five in the first and capitalizing on a miscue by Sanchez that brought in two runs. A single through the right side plated two more.
Â
UAlbany added four more runs on three hits in the second inning off Veilleux.
Â
The River Hawks scored on a single to left from DeGroot before adding another run in the fifth from Mendick.
