ITHACA, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell baseball team suffered a 5-4 walk-off loss in the opener before an 8-0 defeat in a seven-inning game two of a twin bill against Binghamton at David F. Hoy Field on Monday.

In the first game, freshman Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) broke a three-all tie with a sacrifice fly in the eighth but the River Hawks (5-15, 1-4) couldn't hold onto the one run advantage as the Bearcats (6-12, 3-5) rallied with two runs in the ninth, winning on a two out single to center from Reed Gamache.

Shortstop Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, knocking in his first in the opening frame on a double down the left field line before he and Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) each brought in a run to knot the game at three in the fifth.

Starter Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) didn't earn a decision as the senior threw six innings, surrendering four hits and all three of his runs in the second inning. DeGroot was relieved by freshman Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) who had a perfect seventh and got out an eighth inning jam by getting Jason Agresti to strikeout swinging and Eddie Posavec to line out with runners on the corners.

Ryan (0-1) couldn't get himself out of a similar situation in the ninth as the Bearcats loaded the bases on a pair of singles and bunt with one out. Right fielder Jake Thomas hit sacrifice fly to left to bring in the tying run before Gamache, BU's cleanup hitter, singled to center for the win.

In the backend of the twin bill, the River Hawks threatened with the bases loaded and two outs on in the fourth and fifth innings but couldn't find the hit to put them on the board after the Bearcats chased starter Kevin Veilleux (Manchester, N.H.) after he allowed six earned runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings.

Veilleux (2-3) gave up two earned runs in the third on singles from Gamache and Brendan Skidmore while the Bearcats added a third run on an error by Mendick at short. Binghamton added five runs in the fourth to cap the scoring in the ballgame.

The River Hawks will close out a 10-game road stretch in Providence, R.I. on Wednesday when they take on Brown at 3 p.m.
