HighlightsLOWELL, Mass. - Senior
Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) set a new program record for career stolen bases in a 10-2, six-inning victory for the UMass Lowell softball team (17-29) against Holy Cross (8-17) on Tuesday afternoon at River View Field.
Â
Greene, who came on as a pinch runner in the fifth inning, stole second to tally her 78th stolen base and surpass Kristine Botto '01, taking over the top spot in the record book.
Â
"I thought today was a good day," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "We had a lot of energy and Ally had a chance to get her stolen base record. Overall, we hit well, pitched well and played good defense."
Â
Senior
Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) paced the River Hawks' offensive effort in the outing, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior
Ariana Darcy (Kingston, N.Y.), sophomore
Alisha Welch (Langley, British Columbia) and freshman
Madison Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.), who recorded her first-career start, all logged two hits apiece, as well. Junior
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) went the distance in the circle to pick up the win, improving to 9-11 on the year.
Â
The Crusaders took an early, 1-0 advantage in the top of the first, when Emily Jarvis caused a rundown, allowing teammate Emily Krisanda to score from third.
Â
Handley and the River Hawks' defense retired the Holy Cross side in order in the next two innings. Senior
Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) led off the second inning for UMass Lowell with a base hit down the right field line. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Welch and third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there.
Â
M. Alcorn reached on a two-base error in the home half of the third before junior
Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.) singled to left, putting runners on the corners. Sophomore
Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) then followed with a squeeze bunt to knot the score at 1-1.Â
Â
The teams traded long balls in the fourth, as Taylor Moss homered for the visitors and Welch retaliated with one of her own for the River Hawks to make the score, 2-2. King then added a RBI single and Martin lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, giving UMass Lowell its first lead of the day. The squad would plate a pair of unearned runs off of a miscue by the opponents in the same at-bat to pull ahead, 6-2.
Â
Holy Cross left runners on second and third in the fifth thanks to a diving grab by Darcy in center. In the home half of the inning, the River Hawks rallied for three more runs on four hits, including a two-run liner by King and a RBI double by M. Alcorn.
Â
Freshman
Vanessa Cooper (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) drove a leadoff double off the fence in center field to start the sixth inning. Freshman pinch runner
Colleen Frank (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) moved to third on a groundout and eventually scored on an infield error by Holy Cross to walk off with the 10-2, mercy-rule decision.
The River Hawks will wrap up their 2015 campaign with a 4 p.m. tilt at Boston University tomorrow, Wednesday, April 29.
