Box Score 2 (PDF)STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell softball team (15-25, 4-9) dropped a pair of decisions at America East Conference opponent Stony Brook (23-13, 9-2) on Wednesday afternoon.
The River Hawks fell, 3-0, in game one before being topped, 2-0, in game two.
"Overall, I thought it was a pretty good performance for us," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "It's pretty tough to win when you don't score any runs, but we played hard and battled up at the plate. In the first game, we just couldn't get any hits with runners in scoring position. In the second game, I thought their pitcher threw well and we struggled to get people on base."
Sophomore
Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) and senior
Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) each posted two hits on the day. Junior
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) and senior
Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) split time in the circle in game one, while
Erica Armenti (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went the distance in second game of the twin bill.
In a defensive game one, the River Hawks had three, first-inning base runners, including seniors
Ariana Darcy (Kingston, N.Y.) and
Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.), who were each issued a walk. Sophomore
Alisha Welch (Langley, British Columbia) went opposite field with a double in the second and Alcorn added a base hit, although they were unable to manufacture a run.
Jamieson was stranded for UMass Lowell in the top of the third after ripping a shot to center field. The Seawolves threatened in the home half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. However, the River Hawks turned what would have been a sacrifice fly into a double play when the lead runner was called out for not tagging up. Freshman
Vanessa Cooper (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) ended the at-bat in exciting fashion, using a full stretch at first to get her squad out of the inning unscathed and keep the 0-0 tie intact.
Both sides went three-up and three-down in the fourth before SBU broke the game open with a two-run home run by Allie Pisciotta in the fifth.
In the sixth inning, senior
Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) and Welch drew walks, but the squad was unable to capitalize. The Seawolves extended their margin to 3-0 in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch, and were able to retire the UMass Lowell side in order in the seventh to secure the decision.
Game two started off much like game one, as neither team was able to plate a run in the first two innings. Greene accounted for the River Hawks' lone hit, legging out a bunt single in the top of the first.
Stony Brook's Allison Cukrov carried her squad in the circle, retiring 21 consecutive River Hawks after Greene to keep the bases empty throughout the remainder of the contest.
The Seawolves got on the board in the home half of the third, loading the bases before scoring on a miscue by the visitors. They would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with three hits, including a RBI single by Kellie Reynolds, en route to the 2-0 outcome.
The River Hawks are back in action tomorrow, Thursday April 23, when they host Central Connecticut State in a pair of games beginning at 2 p.m. at River View Field in Lowell.
