STORRS, Conn. – Held hitless until the sixth, the UMass Lowell baseball team was unable to generate enough offense to keep up with UConn, falling 17-2, at J.O. Christian Field on Wednesday.

The River Hawks (9-21, 5-6 America East) dropped their second straight game after falling to Brown last night, while the Huskies won their second consecutive and improve to 27-15 overall with a 6-6 mark in the American.

Connecticut posted seven unanswered runs and totaled nine earned against River Hawks starter Brendan Shea (Belmont, Mass.) while handing the River Hawks their worst loss of the season. Shea falls to 0-4 after giving up 10 hits and nine runs with five walks and three strikeouts.

The Huskies started their scoring outburst in the second inning when Joe Deroche-Duffin sent a 1-2 pitch from Shea into the hedges over the left field fence. The Huskies would add another run on an RBI double to right center by Vinny Siena.

UConn added three runs in the fourth. Right fielder Jon Testani connected on a two-run home run two batters before Siena clubbed a solo shot out to left field.

In the seventh, Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.) dug out a single hit down the third base line and extended his hit streak to 14 games. Three batters later, the River Hawks added their first run on a double down the left field line by Matt Mottola (Newburyport, Mass.) to score Matt Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) from first.

Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) knocked in Kelly Rooney (Upton, Mass.) for the River Hawks second run on a single to right field in the eighth.

The River Hawks return to the diamond for a three-game set at Hartford this weekend. The teams will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
