LOWELL, Mass. – Junior catcher Emilia Davies (Parker, Colo.) went 2-for-3 with one run scored, as the UMass Lowell softball team (10-21, 0-6) fell, 6-3, in the series finale against America East foe Maine (15-15, 4-2) on Sunday.

Senior Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) added two RBI on the day. Junior Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) went the distance in the circle with four strikeouts and just one walk.

"I thought we hit the ball better today and played better overall," said Head Coach Danielle Henderson. "We just made a couple of mistakes and Maine didn't, and that was the difference in the game."

The Black Bears jumped in front early with a solo home run by Felicia Lennon in the top of the first inning. Greene was hit by a pitch to get aboard for the River Hawks in their first trip to the plate before senior Ariana Darcy (Kingston, N.Y.) doubled to deep left center, but both were left stranded.

Handley and her defense retired the Maine side in order in the second, bringing up Davies, who led off for the home squad with a two-bagger to right center and advanced as far as third on a fly out by sophomore Alisha Welch (Langley, British Columbia).

Maine scratched across two unearned runs in the top of the third to extend their margin to 3-0. UMass Lowell threatened once again in the bottom of the inning, as Greene drew a walk, but the team would not capitalize. The visitors then made it 4-0 in the fourth with a RBI single by Nikki Byron.

The River Hawks chipped away at the difference in the home half of the fourth. Davies got things started with a single through the right side and senior Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass.) followed with a RBI double. Welch added a base hit of her own to put two runners on for Greene, who sent a base-clearing line drive to the fence in left center to make it a one-run game at 4-3.

Neither side was able to make any noise in the fifth, but Maine padded their buffer with two runs in the sixth and held UMass Lowell silent in their next two at-bats to take the 6-3 decision.

Having played their last of nine straight home games, the River Hawks will travel to league opponent Binghamton for a pair of make-up games on Tuesday, April 14 beginning at 1 p.m.
