Harring InterviewSTONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell baseball team struggled in their America East Conference opener, falling to Stony Brook on the road, 10-1, at Joe Nathan Field on Sunday.
Â
The River Hawks (4-11, 0-1) scored one run off Seawolves (9-10, 3-1) southpaw Tyler Honahan who kept their bats quiet over his 6.1 innings of work. Honahan struck out 13 while giving up four hits to pick up his fourth win of the season. River Hawks starter
Christian Lavoie (Hopkinton, Mass.) went six innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and added two strikeouts.
Â
"It's awful tough to come from behind against a good team like Stony Brook," said Head Coach
Ken Harring. "We've come from behind a couple times this year but you put a good team out there with a really good arm on the mound who had our number today and things can snowball pretty quick."
Â
After throwing a scoreless first, Lavoie gave up a pair of runs in the second after walking the first two batters and erring on a bunt down the first base line to load the bases. SBU's Casey Baker singled to right to bring the games first run in before Bobby Honeyman grounded into a double play to score the second run.
Â
The River Hawks threatened in the top of third when
Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) reached on catcher's interference,
Kelly Rooney (Upton, Mass.) walked and
Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) was hit to load the bases. Senior shortstop
Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.) fell victim to Honahan, striking out swinging with two outs to end the inning.
Â
Seawolves second baseman Robert Chavarria knocked in the first of his two RBI in the third with a sacrifice fly. SBU added two in the fourth and one more in the fifth before the River Hawks got to Honahan.
Â
With one out in the seventh, Rooney drew a walk and Consolmagno singled to center leading to Honahan's exit. Seawolves reliever Chad Lee picked up the second out on a fly out by Mendick before third baseman
Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) singled to right center to score the River Hawks lone run.
Â
The River Hawks and Seawolves will double-dip on Monday afternoon with the first game scheduled for noon.
