Photo GalleryBOSTON— The quest for No. 12 UMass Lowell's third consecutive Hockey East Championship ended Saturday night, as Boston University took home the trophy with a 5-3 win at the TD Garden.
The Terriers (25-7-5) struck first with 6:51 remaining in the first when Matt Grzelcyk collected a tipped pass from Jack Eichel and sent it home past
Kevin Boyle.
Less than a minute later, Nickolas Olsson gathered a loose puck along the boards and snuck it by Boyle, but the play was overturned when a BU player was called offsides.
Eichel made it 2-0 off Boyle's pads at 15:02 of the first period.
Joe Gambardella (Staten Island, N.Y.) cut the deficit to 2-1 after the River Hawks (21-12-6) went on the power play at 18:10 of the first. On the ensuing face off, the sophomore won the draw and went to the net, where he collected the rebound off of
Tommy Panico's (Wall, N.J.) shot and sent a backhander home.
Panico's helper was his first career point, and Gambardella's tally was his fifth Hockey East post-season goal, the second in as many nights.
The Terriers regained their two-goal lead when Cason Hohmann sent a shot through the closing pads of Boyle at 5:38 of the second. BU extended its lead to 4-1 with less than a minute to go, on a two-on-none with one-two passing between Grzelcyk and Ollson, which ended with Ollson finding the back of the net.
Michael Kapla (Eau Claire, Wis.) scored his second career post-season goal, which got UMass Lowell back within 4-2 with 13:13 on the clock. The sophomore sent a rising wrist shot that beat Matt O'Connor stick side, after receiving a pass from
Michael Fallon (Glenview, Ill.) in the slot.
Eichel scored his second of the game with 5:17 remaining in the third period to seal the game.
Michael Louria (Wexford, Pa.) made it 5-3 with 3:08 remaining, picking up the loose puck after a collision and going in on O'Connor and using a backhand move to slide the puck in.
Eichel and Grzelcyk both had game-high three points, while Fallon had a team-high two assists, tying his caree-high.
Boyle made 19 saves, including 9 in the third period. O'Connor stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced.
