Box Score 2 (PDF)CLEARWATER, Fla. – Sophomore
Alisha Welch (Langley, British Columbia) went 4-for-6 (.667) at the plate with three RBI, as the UMass Lowell softball team finished 1-1 on day two of the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater.
Â
The River Hawks held off Army to take an 8-7 victory in game one before falling, 6-5, against Lehigh in game two.
Â
Sophomore
Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) chipped in with three hits (.600) and a team-best four runs scored, while senior
Melissa King (Stamford, Conn.) batted .400 on the day. Senior
Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) picked up the win, allowing just three hits with two strikeouts in three innings of relief work.
Â
In game one, UMass Lowell survived a late rally by the Black Knights. Alcorn scored the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning off junior
Taylor August's (Howell, N.J.) sacrifice fly to right field.
Â
The River Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second in the outing when Alcorn scored on an error by the pitcher, and Welch crossed the plate on a throwing miscue by the catcher.
Â
After the Black Knights cut into the lead in the top of the third, 2-1, junior
Emilia Davies (Parker, Colo.) scored in the home half of the inning to regain the two-run buffer for her squad.
Â
Davies later doubled to begin the four-run fourth, driving in junior
Alyssa Zinkiewicz (Massapequa, N.Y.), who then scored on freshman
Vanessa Cooper's (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) single down the right field line. Welch then capped off the inning with a two-RBI single to left center, knocking in senior
Ariana Darcy (Kingston, N.Y.) and Cooper.
Â
Down 7-1, Army scored three times in the fifth and three times in the sixth to knot the score, but August's sac fly came in their next at-bat to seal the decision.
Â
In game two, UMass Lowell and Lehigh were locked in a scoreless battle for three complete innings before the visitors plated three runs on three hits in the fourth to pull away.
Â
The River Hawks were retired in order in the home half of the fourth, but were able to get on the board in the fifth thanks to a RBI single to center by senior
Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.).
Â
UMass Lowell took the lead, 5-3, with four runs in the sixth, including a two-RBI base hit by junior
Brianna Martin (Methuen, Mass.). Lehigh retaliated, though, with the final three runs of the game in the top of the seventh to secure the 6-5 outcome.
