LAST TIME OUT: The River Hawks three-game win streak was brought to a halt on Saturday in a 93-57 road loss at the hands of UAlbany. The River Hawks hung with the Great Danes over the opening 10 minutes of the first half as the teams exchanged the lead twice and drew even three times. UAlbany took control of the game with a 37-12 run to take a 46-21 lead into the break. Junior Melissa Frase did her best to keep the River Hawks in it as she got hot from distance and matched her season and career-high for the second straight game by knocking down three three-pointers - all during the UAlbany run. The freshmen trio of Kayla Gibbs, Jontay Walton and Brianna Rudolph trailed Frase with each scoring nine points.
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS: The Black Bears are riding a nine-game winning streak to sit at 9-1 in the America East and 17-6 overall. Sigi Koizar and Liz Wood lead the offense with 14.7 and 13.7 points per game, respectively. Wood, who tallied her 1,000th career point as UMaine defeated Hartford 63-45 on Sunday, is also dishing out a team-high 3.5 assists along with grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game. Maine is shooting 43 percent (502-1168) from the field, and 31.8 percent (161-506) from three-point range.
ALL-TIME SERIES: The River Hawks trail 0-3 in the series against the Black Bears after dropping both meetings last season and the first matchup this season, 68-54. Maine junior forward Liz Wood did it all for the Black Bears in last months contest, notching her first career triple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 helpers while picking up six steals. UMass Lowell was led by Shannon Samuels who sank three treys and finished with a game-high 19 points. Junior forward Lindsey Doucette fell just short of a double-double and finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.
In 2013-14, then-sophomore Lindsey Doucette scored 17 points and grabbed 13 boards in a 75-66 home loss. Guards Jasmine McRoy and Shannon Samuels tallied 19 and 16 points, respectively, with McRoy adding eight rebounds. Maine claimed the second matchup, 84-65, at the Cross Insurance Center despite Samuels 31-point outpour and another double-double from Doucette who totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds.
HOME COMFORT: The River Hawks return home where they hold a 8-5 record and have won their last two. The team will entertain New Hampshire at the Tsongas Center before wrapping up the season in a non-conference bout against NJIT on March 3rd.
HUNTING SEASON:Â Despite falling in all three games, a pair of River Hawks have found individual success against the Black Bears. Guard Shannon Samuels is averaging 22.0 points against Maine, highlighted by a 31-point effort last year. Samuels has also made 24-of-28 free throws (85.7%), including a 14-for-15 performance on the road a year ago. Lindsey Doucette has also made her presence felt with double-doubles in two-of-three career games against the Black Bears and is averaging 12.3 points and 11.3 rebounds while swiping 2.3 steals per game. She fell just short earlier this season when she had 11 rebounds but scored eight points.
FRESHMEN TRIO GROWING UP: River Hawk freshmen Brianna Rudolph, Jontay Walton and Kayla Gibbs have scored 80 of the teams 207 points (38.6%) over the last three games. The trio have also accounted for 365 of the 1,499 points (24.3%) scored by the team this season.
FRASE HEAT CHECK: Junior guard Melissa Frase matched her career-high of three made three-pointers in consecutive games with a 3-for-4 performance at Albany after gong 3-for-6 at UMBC. The six treys accounts for 22.2 percent of her 27 made this season.
EARLY SUCCESS: The River Hawks 10th win of the season last Wednesday moved first-year head coach Jenerrie Harris into a second place tie with Carol Mastacouris for most wins by a head coach in their first season. She only trails Deborah Preis (12) for most wins.
HITTING THE ROAD: The game against the Black Bears is the lone home contest and the middle point of a stretch of four-of-five road games. The River Hawks split the first two games, picking up a 84-78 win at UMBC before dropping the last contest in Albany. Looking ahead, the team will play three of the final five games away from Lowell where they hold a 2-8 record.
FOUR IN DOUBLE-FIGURES: The River Hawks have had four players score in double-digits seven times this season, most recently in last Wednesdayís win over UMBC. The team holds a 5-2 record in such games.
TWO-TIME: The loss in Albany snapped the River Hawks second three-game win streak of the season. UMass Lowell beat Mt. Ida (93-41), Fairleigh Dickinson (78-67) and Columbia (69-59) during their first streak before dismissing Vermont (72-63), Binghamton (66-49) and UMBC (84-78) most recently.
DOUBLING UP: With 10 wins the River Hawks have doubled their win total from last season, which was their first of a four-year transition into the Division I ranks.
RUDOLPH FLYING HIGH: Freshman Brianna Rudolph has hit her stride offensively, leading the River Hawks scoring attack in three of the past seven games, including a 17-point effort against UMBC. Rudolph reached that same mark against Hartford, marking the second time she just missed her season-high of 18 which she set against Mt. Ida.
THREES WILD: In the last 10 games the team has made six or more treys nine times and has made more triples then their opponents in eight of those contests. The River Hawks continue to lead the America East in three-pointers made per game (7.2) and shooting percentage (34.0%) while reclaiming the top spot in shooting percentage defensed (28.3%).
