The River Hawks caught fire after a slow start, sinking eight first half three-pointers on their way to their third straight win, improving to 10-12 overall and 4-6 in America East action. The loss drops the Retrievers to 7-15 and 2-7 in league play.

UMass Lowell led by as many as 23 in the first half and took a 49-30 lead at halftime before UMBC started their comeback with the 11 unanswered points after the break. The Retrievers cut the River Hawks lead down to as few as three before senior
Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, Md.) sank a pair of free throws and junior
Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) added a jumper.Â

Freshmen
Brianna Rudolph (Lynn, Mass.),
Jontay Walton (Buffalo, N.Y.) and
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) led the River Hawks down the stretch scoring 15 of the final 19 points. Rudolph scored eight of her team-high 17 points over the final 5:38 with a combination of jumpers and layups in transition while Gibbs and Walton added seven from the charity stripe.

Doucette trailed Rudolph on the team with 15 points and grabbed six rebounds while
Shannon Samuels (Windsor, Conn.) and McRoy scored 14 and 12, respectively.

The River Hawks got on the board when sophomore
Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.), making her first start of the season, found Doucette inside for an easy layup. Samuels gave the River Hawks their first lead of the game at 12-11 when she picked up a loose ball and made a jumper in the lane.

The River Hawks three-point barrage in the first half was spearheaded by junior
Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.), who connected on three of the teams eight. Samuels added two while Doucette, McRoy and Rudolph each sank one of their own.
The team made four triples during a critical 17-3 run late in the first half.

UMass Lowell, who remains perfect in four meetings against UMBC, held the edge over UMBC in assists (19-11), bench points (32-6) and steals (8-7). The River Hawks also turned 18 Retriever turnovers into 25 points.

The River Hawks will travel to Albany to take on the Great Danes on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m. at SEFCU Arena.
