No. 16 River Hawks skate to 2-2 tie at No. 10 Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The No. 16 UMass Lowell hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie at No. 10 Boston College on Friday night in Hockey East action at Conte Forum's Kelley Rink.

With the tie, the River Hawks now own a 17-10-5 overall record (10-7-3 HEA) heading into the final weekend of regular-season play. Boston College is now 18-10-3 and 11-6-3 in league play. UMass Lowell is currently in a tie with Providence College for third place in the Hockey East standings with 23 points apiece, but the Friars hold one game in hand.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first in the game with a tally by Adam Gilmour just 5:45 into the opening period.

Junior forward Adam Chapie (Oxford, Mich.) tied the game at 1-1 off a cross slot pass from sophomore defenseman Michael Kapla (Eau Claire, Wis.), which beat Thatcher Demko blocker side for his 10th goal of the season at the 13:24 mark of the second period.

Sophomore forward Joe Gambardella (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a shorthanded goal to give the River Hawks a 2-1 lead just 2:40 into the third period off a nice give and go play in the slot from Chapie that beat Demko low blocker side.

BC's Ian McCoshen score on a wrist shot over the right shoulder of UMass Lowell junior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) just 22 seconds later from the right faceoff circle to tie the game for good. The Eagles outshot UMass Lowell, 20 to 6, in the third frame and the overtime session.

Boyle notched 37 saves in his 25th start of the season, while Demko totaled 22 stops for the Eagles.

UMass Lowell went 0-for-6 on the power play, while BC went 1-for-3 with the man advantage. Chapie registered a team-high four shots on goal in the tie for the River Hawks. UMass Lowell won 34 of 63 faceoffs on the night, led by sophomore forward Evan Campbell who won 14 of 23 (61%) from the faceoff dot.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Friday, February 27th vs. Vermont in the final series of the regular-season schedule.
