River Hawks Setback at Stony Brook, 62-36

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team suffered a 62-36 setback to Stony Brook to conclude a two-game road stretch at Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Wednesday night.
 
The River Hawks struggled on offense as they made 25.9 percent (15-58) of their attempts from the field and 14.3 percent (3-21) of their three-pointers. The loss drops their record to 11-15 overall and 5-9 in the America East while the Seawolves climb to 15-11, with an 8-5 mark in league play.
 
Both teams had issues scoring in the first half as SBU took a 15-13 lead at halftime before they poured in 47 points on 66.7 percent shooting after the break. The River Hawks increased their point total from the first half to 23 in the second while making all three of their three-pointers for the game as Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) made a pair while Shannon Samuels (Windsor, Conn.) made the other.
 
Samuels finished with a team-high nine points and picked up three assists for the River Hawks.
 
Freshman Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) made her second consecutive start and scored the games opening bucket before the Seawolves responded with eight straight points. The River Hawks regained the lead on a layup by Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, Md.) near the final minute of the half but SBU's Sabre Proctor sank a wing three to give her team a lead they wouldn't relinquish. McRoy finished the contest with two points, 11 rebounds and two steals.
 
Proctor finished with 16 points and eight rebounds while Brittany Snow scored a game-high 19 points.
 
The River Hawks will host New Hampshire at the Tsongas Center in a doubleheader with the men's team on Saturday. The women tip-off at 2 p.m. with the men scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
