HighlightsLOWELL, Mass. - Freshman
Lance Crawford (Davie, Fla.) posted a personal-best 35 points to lead the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (12-15, 6-8) to an 82-71 victory against the University of Maine (3-23, 2-11) on Wednesday evening.
Â
The decision marked the first back-to-back wins for the River Hawks since early December. In addition, the 82-point performance goes down as the most points against a Division I opponent since the 2013-14 season finale, which was also against Maine. Crawford becomes UMass Lowell's first 35-point scorer since November 12, 2011. Classmate
Matt Harris (Erie, Pa.) added to the offense effort and tied a season-high with 21 points, making for the program's first game with multiple 20-point scorers since January 23, 2013.
Â
"I'm very pleased with the win tonight," said Head Coach
Pat Duquette. "The guys played hard and they executed well both on offense and defense. We got a lot of good, open shots in the second half. We don't typically score this many points and I think that's a testament to what our team did tonight. We kept the floor spaced, shared the ball and were aggressive in transition to get some easy looks. This is a great win for the program."
Â
The River Hawks got on the board with five straight points from Crawford, and although Maine would pull within one, the home team led 18-10 with 13:22 minutes remaining in the first half thanks to threes from senior
Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.) and Harris.
Â
The Black Bears used a 10-3 spurt to make it a one-possession game once more at 21-20, but freshman
Brad Schaub (Marlette, Mich.) banked in a pair of layups to give the home squad a 25-20 margin with 5:23 to play in the period. Harris hit back-to-back long balls to give UMass Lowell its largest lead of the half, 31-22, with just over three minutes left. Maine followed with seven of the last nine points of the first half, but the River Hawks held on to take a slight, 33-31 edge into the break.
Â
Coming out of halftime, Holley and Crawford drained three-pointers, as UMass Lowell pulled ahead, 41-35. Sophomore
Tyler Livingston (Hudson, N.H.) added a jumper from long range of his own before the visitors put together a 9-1 run, cutting the difference to just one at 46-45 with 12:44 to go.
Â
Maine came within one point of the lead once more, but the River Hawks answered with another three from Livingston and eight points by Harris, making the score 59-49 at 9:29.
Â
The teams traded possessions over the next several minutes, with the River Hawks maintaining at least a six-point margin before sealing the 82-71 outcome.
Â
Redshirt-senior
Kerry Weldon (New York, N.Y.) led the River Hawks on the boards with eight rebounds. As a team, UMass Lowell shot 47.4% from the floor (27-57), including 40.6% (13-32) from three-point territory, and 93.8% (15-16) from the line.
Â
Maine was led by five double-digit scorers, including Till Gloger with 23 points and nine rebounds.
Â
Wednesday's contest marked the sixth meeting ever between UMass Lowell and Maine in the sport of men's basketball. The River Hawks now lead the all-time series, 5-1. UMass Lowell will play its home finale on Saturday, February 21 at 4 p.m. against New Hampshire as part of a doubleheader with the women's basketball team. It will be Senior Day for the team, honoring Weldon, Holley and graduate student
Marco Banegas-Flores (Boston, Mass.).
