Lindsey Doucette (14) paced the offensive attack while McRoy (9) and Doucette (8) cleaned the boards for UMass Lowell.
The River Hawks surged past the Hawks by scoring 14 unanswered points over the final four minutes of the half before stretching their lead to 16 with just under 12 minutes to play. Hartford would heat up from downtown with three treys in the closing minutes and whittled their deficit to one before Doucette stepped in for a key steal with just over a minute. The Hawks had a chance to take the lead on the ensuing possession but missed a shot inside that was corralled by freshman Jontay Walton who got fouled immediately. Walton sank both free throws before Hartford missed their desperation attempt in the final seconds.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES:Â The Seawolves had their three-game winning streak snapped by Maine on February 15, and sit at 14-11 overall and 7-5 in America East play. Sabre Proctor leads the offense averaging 14.9 points per game. Kori Bayne-Walker and Brittany Snow trail her with 11 and 10.9 points, respectively. Bayne-Walker also dishes out a team-high 5.5 assists. Jessica Ogunnorin controls the glass for Stony Brook, grabbing 7.6 rebounds. As a unit the Seawolves are shooting 42 percent (558-1327) from the floor, and 28.6 percent (103-360) from three-point range.
ALL-TIME SERIES:Â The River Hawks lead the all-time series over the Seawolves, 6-5. The history between the two dates back to the schools Division II days in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC). The teams exchanged the lead 12 times and drew even 13 in the first meeting this year as SBU held on late for a 64-60 decision. UMass Lowell cut the SBU lead to a single-point five times in the final five minutes but couldnt find the go-ahead bucket. Stony Brook pushed their lead to three on a layup by Sabre Proctor while Kori Bayne-Walker iced it with a free throw after a missed three by Jasmine McRoy. The River Hawks had four reach double-figures in the scoring department led by McRoy's 14, 12 of which came after the break. She was trailed by Kayla Gibbs (13), Shannon Samuels (12) and Melissa Frase (10).
EARLY SUCCESS:Â The River Hawks 65-62 triumph at Hartford on Saturday was the teams 11th win of the season, moving first-year head coach Jenerrie Harris into sole possession of second place for most wins by a head coach in their first season. After passing Carol Mastacouris with 10 wins, Harris only trails Deborah Preis (12) for first.
GIBBS FIRST: River Hawks freshman Kayla Gibbs notched her first career start against the Hawks on Saturday. The forward came out aggressive scoring four of the teams eight points to start and finished the game with nine points and six rebounds. In the first meeting against the Seawolves, Gibbs was perfect from the field (4/4) and charity stripe (5/5) as she matched her season-high of 13 points while she grabbed six boards.
STEALING THE SHOW: Junior forward Lindsey Doucette picked an opportune time for her only steal on Saturday, stepped in and grabbing a pass with just over a minute. The late theft not only helped turn away the Hawks comeback bid but it also matched the team season-high as they finished with 12 swipes. It marks the third time the River Hawks have reached a dozen steals as they also did it against Binghamton and Vermont.
HITTING THE ROAD:Â Wednesday night's contest against the Seawolves is the final game of a stretch of four-of-five away from Lowell where he River Hawks hold a record of 3-8. The River Hawks split the first two games on the road, picking up an 84-78 win at UMBC before falling in Albany. The team returned home and suffered a 74-46 loss to Maine before bouncing back in Hartford. The team will host New Hampshire at the Tsongas Center on Saturday before playing Vermont in their final road game. NJIT will travel to Lowell in a non-conference tilt to conclude the 2014-15 campaign on March 3rd.
FOUR IN DOUBLE-FIGURES: The River Hawks have had four or more players score in double-figures eight times this season, including in the first meeting against the Seawolves. The team holds a 5-3 record in those games.
THREES WILD: UMass Lowell is second in the America East with 176 three-pointers made, edged by Hartford's 179. Over the last 12 games the team has made six or more treys 10 times and has made more than their opponent in eight of those contests. The River Hawks continue to lead the AE in three-pointers made per game (7.0) and three-point shooting percentage (33.4%). On the other side of the ball the team has held their opponents to a league low 115 three-pointers -one less than SBU- and is second in three-point shooting percentage defensed (29.7%).
SAMUELS CAREER NIGHT: Senior Shannon Samuels hung a career-high 35 points on the Seawolves last year at home. The guard made four from distance and went 9-of-11 from the charity stripe while handing out four assists.
