BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UMass Lowell men's basketball team (10-15, 4-8) dropped a 96-53 decision at the University of Vermont (15-10, 10-2) on Wednesday evening.

Senior Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.) paced the River Hawks with 16 points in the outing, while graduate student Marco Banegas-Flores (Boston, Mass.) registered nine. Redshirt-senior Kerry Weldon (New York, N.Y.) totaled a team-high five rebounds, as well.

The Catamounts jumped out to a quick 12-0 advantage before Banegas-Flores pulled down an offensive board and followed with the River Hawks' first bucket of the night.

Holley drove to the basket for a layup at 14:35, but UVM continued to pressure with another 12 straight points to extend its buffer to 29-6 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Holley would break the three-minute scoreless stretch for UMass Lowell with a jumper from long range, and although junior DJ Mlachnik (Muskego, Wis.) and freshman Lance Crawford (Davie, Fla.) added three-pointers of their own, the squad was unable to come any closer in the period, as the Catamounts used a 20-3 run to take a 57-19 margin into the break.

Coming out of halftime, freshman Brad Schaub (Marlette, Mich.) drained back-to-back threes for the River Hawks. Sophomore Tyler Livingston (Hudson, N.H.) also struck from beyond the arc and followed with a pair of free throws before Holley banked in a layup to make the score 68-33 with 13:51 still to play. UVM continued to pull away, however, taking its largest lead of the night, 92-43, at 4:33.

In the waning minutes of the contest, Holley floated in a layup to spark a 10-4 River Hawk spurt, including four points from Banegas-Flores, but the Catamounts would still go on to secure the 96-53 decision.

Ethan O'Day posted a game-high 21 points for the home squad to lead five double-digit scorers. Vermont shot 66.7% (36-54) from the floor in the outing, including 76.2% (16-21) from beyond the arc.

Wednesday's contest marked the fourth meeting ever between UMass Lowell and Vermont in the sport of men's basketball. The Catamounts now own a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series. The River Hawks return home to host Hartford in a Valentine's Day matinee on Saturday, February 14 beginning at 2 p.m.
