LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team travels to South Florida for weekend matchups against Florida International on December 4 and Miami on Dec. 6.
Looking at the River HawksThe River Hawks jumped out to a 10-2 lead against the Terriers and never looked back, never trailing in their 70-57 win.
Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) dropped a game-high 23 points and snagged nine rebounds. She also recorded four steals in 35 minutes.
Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) tied her career-high with 15 point, hitting a trio of three pointers.
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) had her five-game streak with 10+ points snapped, scoring nine, but also grabbed 10 boards. UMass Lowell gave up only eight points in the first quarter, and shot 42.6 percent from the field for the game.Â
Leading the FlockThree River Hawks are averaging double-digits this season, Gibbs is leading the way with 14.3 points, and snagging 9.7 rebounds per game.
Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) is averaging 13.3 points and leads the team with 10 made long balls. Following her past two performances of 16 and 23 points, Doucette is now scoring 11.2 per game.
Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) has dished out 16 assists to facilitate the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has four blocks, and Hayner has nine steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 134-of-364 (36.8 %) from the field and 28.7 percent (31-108) from three-point range.
Scouting Florida InternationalThe Panthers enter Friday's contest 1-4, after dropping four straight decisions. In last week's FIU Turkey Slam Tournament, FIU fell to Marquette, 95-83, on Nov. 27 before being defeated by Wichita State, 76-62, on Nov. 29. Piloting the offense is junior Janka Hegedus, averaging a team-best 15.2 points per game and six blocks, while shooting 49.1 percent from the field. Senior Taylor Shade and junior Tianah Alvarado sit close behind, averaging 14.3 and 13.6 points, respectively, while grabbing 22 boards apiece through five games. Senior Destini Feagin has snatched a team-high 31 rebounds, in addition to her 15 assists and 10.6 points per game. The Panthers are shooting 42.3 percent (127-300) from the field, and 36-of-103 (35%) from three-point range.
Scouting MiamiMiami comes into this week's contest 8-0, and host Coppin State
on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m., before squaring off against the River Hawks on Sunday . The Hurricanes extended their win streak defeating La Salle, 86-58, on Nov. 29 and Illinois, 73-64, on Dec. 2. Leading the scoring is junior Adrienne Motley, averaging a commanding 17.0 points per game, while shooting 49.6 percent from the field, and dishing out 29 assists with 14 steals. Defensively, freshman Emese Hof is grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game, with second-best seven blocks so far in 2015. As a team, the Hurricanes hold an impressive 19.6 scoring margin over their opponents, while shooting 43.2 percent (239-553) from the field and 30.1 percent (50-166) from long range.
Series HistoryThese will be the first meetings between the River Hawks and each team this weekend.
Balling in the America EastThe River Hawks rank third in the America East in three-point field goals made per game (5.0), assists per game (11.4) and steals per game (8.4). Hayner leads the team all three categories with 2.5 3FG made, 3.0 apg and 2.3 spg.
From Start to FinishThe victory against Boston University marked the third time in the Division I era that the River Hawks won a game in which they never trailed. Last season UMass Lowell defeated Columbia and New Hampshire in such games.
