LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell (0-4) women's basketball team fell to the Bryant Bulldogs (2-2), 83-64, in the night cap of the first Costello doubleheader of the season Tuesday night.
"The girls played hard out there tonight, especially in the first half," said Head Coach Jenerrie Harris. "We tired out there in the second half and still fought, but in the end it just wasn't enough. All the credit goes to Bryant, shooting 53 percent from the field and 56 from three-point range, those are winning numbers."
The visitors jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first 1:42 of the game, but an 8-3 run for the River Hawks had the game knotted up at 10-10 with 5:34 remaining in the quarter. Layups by Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) and Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) gave UMass Lowell its first lead of the game at 14-13 over a minute later. Nicole Hayner (Bedford, Mass.) hit her first three-point attempt of the night for a 17-16 lead with 3:47 on the clock. Doucette added her fifth and sixth points of the opening frame to open up a 21-18 lead with under a minute to go.
Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) hit her first career three pointer in the opening moments of the second quarter for a 24-22 lead. Breanna Rucker hit a jumper to regain a slim, 25-24 margin for the Bulldogs with just under eight minutes remaining. The visitors used the momentum to hold a 43-35 advantage at the intermission.
Hayner and Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) each had 10 points for UMass Lowell at the half, as did Rucker and Tiersa Winder for Bryant.
In the third quarter, Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) hit two three-pointers over a 76 second span to pull the River Hawks within 52-45. Despite hitting three long balls in the quarter, the River Hawks were outscored 24-1, and Bryant took a 67-52 lead into the fourth and final quarter.
Gibbs finished with a team-high 16 points and nine points, while Hayner added 15. For the second time in her career, Gibbs scored double-digits in four consecutive games, Hayner achieved the feat for the first time in her career.
Winder and Rucker led the Bulldog attack with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Rucker snagged 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Ivory Bailey added 15 points and seven boards.
The River Hawks are off until after Thanksgiving, traveling to Rhode Island to take on the Rams on November 29 at 2 p.m.
