LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team continues its opening stretch of the season with a non-conference clash at Central Connecticut State on Tuesday, November 17 at 7 p.m.
Looking at the River HawksUMass Lowell (0-1) fell to No. 6 Maryland 102-53 in the season opener for both teams.
Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) led the team with 15 points, going 4-of-8 from three-point range, and recorded a career-high three steals.
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) added 12 points and eight rebounds, along with
Lindsey Doucette's (Hopkinton, Mass.) 10 points and eight boards.
Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) helped the offense with five assists. Â
Scouting Central ConnecticutThe Blue Devils are entering it contest against UMass Lowell 0-1 after dropping their season opener at Vermont, 79-63, on Friday, November 13. Despite the teams losing effort, senior guard Kayla Miller paced her team on both sides of the ball, posting a team-high 14 points, four steals with nine rebounds on the night. Sophomore guard Camden Musgrave added to the squads' offense, going 3-of-5 from beyond the arch to tally nine points while freshman Sydney Hines and sophomore Emma Stroynan added eights points apiece.
Head Coach Jenerrie Harris on CCSU"Central Connecticut will be a tough team for us to defend, they have a lot of athletic and long players at every position. All five of their players on the court at any time can be a threat, so that will be a huge challenge for us, but it will no different than the challenge we saw on Saturday."
Series HistoryThe River Hawks are 1-7 overall against CCSU, and 0-1 in the program's Division I era. The Blue Devils defeated UMass Lowell last season, 81-58, behind 16 points from Tejahne Malone and Kayla Miller's double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds).
Shannon Samuels and Doucette led the way for the River Hawks, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively.
Controlling the BoardsWith four rebounds against Maryland, Frase has 99 career boards. She looks to join Doucette (577), Gibbs (113) and
Lauren Parra (107) as active players with over 100 career rebounds.
Keeping Up with the Deep BallWith the team's 7-of-23 shooting (30.4 percent) performance from downtown, the River Hawks are on pace with last year's efficiency that lead the America East with 33 percent. UMass Lowell only trails Vermont (47.4 percent) and Hartford's 31.3 percent, with the Hawks playing in one more game than the River Hawks.
