DAVIS, Calif. – Seniors Kelly Freitas (Manchester, Mass.) and Jessica Walsh (North Easton, Mass.) tallied one goal apiece, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-7) fell, 3-2, at UC Davis (7-9) on Friday afternoon.

"We need to be more detail-oriented in order to win games," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "Lacking the details and not having our players able to take control of the game have led to our problems in the past six games."

In addition to K. Freitas and Walsh, junior Georgia Cowderoy (Ashmore, Queensland, Australia) also tallied a point in the contest with one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Federico (Windham, N.H.) finished with five stops.

Although UMass Lowell drew an early corner opportunity, UC Davis tallied the first three shots of the day. The River Hawks would take a 1-0 lead, however, on a penalty corner with just over 14 minutes left in the period. On that play, Walsh stepped just inside the arc and fired towards the lower corner of the cage.

The home squad retaliated with three shots in the waning minutes of the first, but was unable to capitalize, keeping UMass Lowell's one-goal buffer intact at the break.

Coming out of halftime, UC Davis was quick to knot the score less than one minute into play when Augustina Singh collected her own rebound and found the back of the cage on the follow-up attempt. Just over 12 minutes later, Jamie Garcia connected with Lauren Mewes to break the stalemate and put the Aggies on top, 2-1.

UMass Lowell threatened with a pair of shots on a corner with 18 minutes remaining, including one by Jenna Freitas (Manchester, N.H.) that missed just wide.

UC Davis made the score 3-1 on a tip-in by Singh, but the River Hawks answered, as K. Freitas got her a stick on a hard ball from Cowderoy, cutting the difference back to one with 8:19 to go. The visitors would not erase the deficit entirely, though, giving the Aggies the 3-2 victory.

Friday's contest marked just the second meeting ever between UMass Lowell and UC Davis. The all-time series is now tied at 1-1. The River Hawks will stay out west for one more game, as they are slated to take on California tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, in a neutral-site contest at the University of the Pacific beginning at 4 p.m.
