BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-6, 0-3) was defeated, 3-2, at America East Conference opponent Vermont (3-9, 1-1) on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Christa Doiron (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) each scored one goal for the River Hawks in the outing.

The Catamounts took an early, 1-0 advantage, converting on a corner opportunity less than 11 minutes into play when Anne-Marie Farmer finished a rebound into the lower corner.

The River Hawks took control of the momentum and drew four consecutive corner chances over the next 17 minutes, but the visitors were unable to capitalize. Vermont would strike once more in the waning minutes of the half with a goal by Landon Warren to take a 2-0 edge into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Doiron got UMass Lowell on the board, cutting the difference to just one with 30 minutes still to play. However, the Catamounts answered one minute later on a hard shot by Carla Godsman to regain a two-goal buffer at 3-1.

UMass Lowell pulled within one once again when Huk fired a long ball from the left side of the circle past the UVM keeper, making the score 3-2 at 20:57. The River Hawks notched four shots in the final minutes, including one by senior Jessica Walsh (North Easton, Mass.) on a last-second corner attempt, but the Catamounts would hold on to earn the 3-2 decision.

Sunday's contest marked the 13th meeting between UMass Lowell and Vermont in the sport of field hockey. The Catamounts now lead the all-time series, 10-2-1. The River Hawks are slated to travel to California for a pair of games beginning with a 4 p.m. tilt at UC Davis on Friday, October 9.
