LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman forward
Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.) lifted the UMass Lowell women's soccer team to a 1-0 double overtime victory against top-ranked Hartford on Senior Day.
The squad wrapped up their season 6-12-0, 3-5-0 AE, and finished with a program high six wins since the Division 1 era.
"It means the world to end the season with a win especially on senior day," said Head Coach
Joel Bancroft. "The seniors put in a tremendous effort today. Hartford is the America East Regular Season Champion and we went out there and beat them. We have continued to set standards and every year we have ended up achieving them. Hartford is a very good and well coached team and we really earned the three points tonight."
The River Hawks' two seniors
Selja Snorradottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) and
Colleen Corliss (Pittsfield, N.H.) were both recognized in a special pre-game ceremony.
The opening half was evenly matched, with both squads taking six shots with one on target. Six different River Hawk's tallied a shot, but Vieira posted the only shot on goal.
The two teams continued to trade shot in the second half, as they tallied eight shots apiece. Goalkeepers
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Jessica Jurge recorded three and five saves respectively, to keep a clean sheet through regulation play.
Junior forward
Taylor Packwood (Somerset, N.J.) had two opportunities to net the game-winner for the home team when she blasted a shot from low in the box but Jurg foiled the opportunity with a diving save. Her second chance came in the 77th minute when she took a shot from 12 yards out that curved left to go wide of the net.
In the 102nd minute, junior forward
Taylor Chianese (Chepachet, R.I.) attempted to end the game, taking a shot that looked to be going in but Jurg got a foot on it as she slid in to make the save.
The game-winner game in the 107th minute, when Vieira put home a penalty kick after a handball in the box off her initial shot. The freshman netted the ball in the right side of the net, as Jurg was too late to make the save.
Vieira tallied her eighth goal of the season as she moves up to fifth on the Single Season Goal list. Her 19 points are good for fifth under Single Season Scoring Leaders (8-3-19) and 19th for Career Scoring Leaders.
Schneider posted three saves in route to her fourth blank sheet on the season. With the shutout, Schneider is now tied for seventh in single season wins (6) and tied eighth on the Career Shutout and Single Season Shutout list.
Sunday's contest marked the third meeting between the River Hawks and Hartford with the Hawks holding a slight 2-1 advantage in the all-time series.
