LOWELL, Mass. – Four former UMass Lowell hockey players who left an indelible mark on the program have been named "Legends of Lowell Hockey" and will be honored during Saturday's Homecoming game (October 24) against Merrimack College at the Tsongas Center.
"The Legends of Lowell Hockey celebration should be a great gathering of former players coming together with the fans and their families to take part in Homecoming activities," said UMass Lowell Hockey Head Coach Norm Bazin. "We congratulate the four inductees and look forward to the ceremony in welcoming them back to the Tsongas."
The honorees, all of whom were previously elected to the University's Athletic Hall of Fame, include two forwards and two goalies. Mike McElligott and Steve Woods provided the scoring touch, accounting for 132 goals and 311 points. Mike Geragosian and Brian Doyle combined for more than 100 wins in the UMass Lowell nets.
The foursome will be honored on the ice during second intermission and at the Riley Reunion post-game festivities in the Talon Club. The "Legends of Lowell Hockey" honors those who played a key role on the ice in the growth of the university's hockey program.
Mike McElligott, a member of the class of 1972, was a key figure in the early development of the UMass Lowell hockey program. He graduated as the second all-time scorer accumulating 55-goals and 151-points in just 61 games. Playing for Lowell Tech, McElligott was the first Terrier to earn ECAC Division II All Star status as he led the 1971-72 team to its first ever post-season appearance. McElligott was inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.
Steve Woods graduated from Lowell Tech in 1975 as the hockey program's all-time leading scorer with 77-goals and 160-points in just 89 games. He played on two ECAC Division II Tournament teams and led the Terriers in scoring three times. Woods had 32 power play goals and 10 game winners. He ranks ninth on the all-time scoring list. Woods entered the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.
Mike Geragosian backboned Lowell Tech to its first ever post-season appearance. He holds the ECAC Division II playoff record for saves in a game with 63. A 1975 graduate, Geragosian was named a First Team Division II All Star by the New England Hockey Writers Association in 1975. He finished with a 34-31-1 record and a 3.83 Goals Against Average. Following graduation he joined Bill Riley's coaching staff and was instrumental in developing the team's goalies who lead ULowell to three National Championships in a four year period. Geragosian joined the Hall of Fame roster in 1981.
Brian Doyle protected the net as ULowell won it's first NCAA Division II National Championship in 1979. He was named to the All-New England Team by the New England Hockey Writers Association in 1977 after compiling a 2.76 GAA. Doyle posted a 3.26 GAA during his four year career as the Chief qualified for the ECAC playoffs four times and the NCAA tournament twice. He was inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.
