Box Score (PDF)STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (5-11-0, 3-5-0 AE) was handed a 1-0 defeat at America East opponent Stony Brook (6-7-3, 3-2-1 AE) on Sunday afternoon.
"Having the luxury of playing later than the rest of the league, we went into the game knowing we had a lot of play for," said Head Coach Joel Bancroft. "A win would have been our third in a row in the conference and would have cemented a playoff spot as well as put us a game out of being top of the league. Credit Stony Brook for their effort and determination in the first half to start quickly and outwork us. Their goal results from hard work and that was all they needed. Regardless of us pressing them and carrying play in large chunks of the second half, it wasn't meant to be on the night. You cannot spot a team a goal on the road and try to play catch up. I really liked our response in the second half and we look to build upon that. To be a championship program we must both recognize and seize golden opportunities like this match. Our focus now moves to Albany."
In what turned out to be a very evenly matched contest, UMass Lowell and Stony Brook traded shots throughout the match, with each squad tallying 12 in the outing.
The Seawolves took the early, 1-0, lead in the 11th minute after Julia Johnstonbaugh put home a cross by Tessa Devereaux to head in her first goal of the season.
UMass Lowell came out in the second half attacking, registering a quick two shots, both nearly missing the net. Junior forward
Carolyn Ragon (Medford, Mass.) blasted a shot in the 47th minute that went just high to hit the crossbar and bounce out of bounds. Less than a minute later, freshman forward
Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.) followed up with a shot that sailed high over the top of the net.
Both squad's had various opportunities to score in the second half, but neither could convert, leaving the lone goal in the first half to be enough for a Seawolves win.
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded three saves in the effort while her counterpart also posted three saves and a clean sheet. Vieira had a game-high four shots with two on goal.
Sunday's contest marked the third meeting between UMass Lowell and Stony Brook in the sport of women's soccer. With the win, the Seawolves now hold a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series. The River Hawks are back in action on Thursday, October 22 as they travel to Albany for their last road game of the year.
