LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman
Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.) posted three points (1g, 1a) as the UMass Lowell women's soccer team rolled past America East opponent Binghamton in a 3-0 shutout, notching it's first conference win.
"Two goals in the first ten minutes is exactly how you want to set the pace," said Head Coach
Joel Bancroft. "The girls took care of business and I like how deep we got into our bench today. Whenever you get a shutout, a conference win, and are at home it's good, whenever you get all three in the same day, you're living well."
UMass Lowell jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring both goals in the first ten minutes of the opening half. Sophomore
Shannon Groffie (Toms River, N.J.) opened up the scoring in the 3rd minute when she found the back of the net on a cross from Vieira. Vieira extended the River Hawks lead in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a Bearcats turnover at the top of the box to tally her seventh goal of the season.
Freshman
Maggie Davenport (Windermere, Fla.) scored the final goal for her squad, collecting a loose ball in front of the goal and tapping it in. The home team attacked throughout the entirety of the game, out shooting their opponent 23-10.
Freshman goalkeeper
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) made four saves in the outing. Late in the game, Katherine Corcoran and Sierra Barr threatened to put their team on the board, but Schneider kept her poise, collecting her third career shutout.
Sunday's contest marked the third meeting between UMass Lowell and Binghamton. With the River Hawks win, the Bearcats now hold a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series.
