STOCKTON, Calif – The UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-8) was defeated, 2-0, by California (8-4) in a neutral-site contest hosted on the campus of the University of the Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Federico (Windham, N.H.) logged a season-best 12 saves on the day. Junior Georgia Cowderoy (Ashmore, Queensland, Australia) and freshman Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) led the River Hawks with two shots apiece.
California's offense controlled the ball in the first half, but UMass Lowell's defense did not waiver. Although the Golden Bears logged the first 12 shots of the day, including seven on goal, stops by Federico kept the game scoreless.
The River Hawks earned their first corner opportunity with less than a minute remaining in the half. Cowderoy took a shot from the top of the circle that missed wide, sending the teams into the break knotted at 0-0.
Coming out of halftime, Cal found the back of cage just 30 seconds into play on a direct corner attempt. Marie Lanckneus sent a shot high over the outstretched stick of Federico with assists from Monica Marrazzo and Bella Forbes.
Three minutes later, Cowderoy and senior Sophie Watt (Sawtell, Australia) threatened with back-to-back shots. The teams traded possessions in the waning minutes of the half before the Golden Bears added an insurance goal in the final seconds, as Allie Zimmer redirected a pass from teammate Clara Goni to seal the 2-0 decision.
Saturday's contest marked the first meeting ever between UMass Lowell and California in the sport of field hockey. The River Hawks return to action on Friday, October 16 when they welcome America East Conference opponent Albany to Wicked Blue Field. That contest is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
