VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior guard Shannon Samuels' (Windsor, Conn.) attempted bank shot in the paint was too strong as the UMass Lowell women's basketball team fell in their America East opener at Binghamton, 65-64, at the Events Center.
The River Hawks (6-7, 0-1 America East) and Bearcats (3-11, 1-0 America East) battled it out to the tune of 15 lead changes with the River Hawks extending their lead to as many as 11 in the second half.
Forward Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded her third double-double of the season while setting the tone for the River Hawks offense early, scoring the teams first six points. Doucette totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds while tying her career-high with five steals.
The team wrapped up the opening half when Jasmine McRoy (Gaithersburg, Md.) found Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) on the left block for a layup that gave the River Hawks a 32-31 advantage at the break.
The River Hawks started the second half on a 9-3 run to take a 41-34 advantage that they would extend to 11 on a baseline jumper from Brianna Rudolph with 11:38 left.
Binghamton continued to chip away, getting buckets from Kim Albrecht and Jasmine Sina to tie the game at 63 with 20 seconds. Samuels would split a pair of free throws before BU guard Imani Watkins made a tough layup with precious few seconds left. Samuels dribbled down the floor and had a fair look at the rim to win it for the River Hawks, but the shot didn't fall.
Albrecht finished with 20 points to give the Bearcats a 4-3 all-time series lead.
The River Hawks will host Health and Fitness Day at the Tsongas Center against UMBC on Thursday at 11 a.m.
