LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Matt Harris (Erie, Pa.) was the lone double-digit scorer with 12 points for the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (9-11, 3-4) in a 65-45 loss against Stony Brook University (13-8, 4-2) on Thursday evening.

"We faced a very good basketball team tonight that played very well," said Head Coach Pat Duquette. "I don't know that if we played well we would have had a chance, but I think we could have made it closer, particularly in the first half. We missed a lot of open shots and my guys got a little discouraged. They opened the game playing pretty good defense, but we couldn't get a rebound. Hats off to Stony Brook because they executed and played hard. Tonight just wasn't one of our better nights."

Harris notched a personal-best four, three-point field goals en route to his team-high 12 points. Redshirt-freshman Jahad Thomas (Williamsport, Pa.) added eight points and paced the squad with six rebounds. Redshirt-senior Kerry Weldon (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Brad Schaub (Marlette, Mich.) posted eight points apiece, as well.

Stony Brook completed two three-point plays in the first three minutes before Weldon put the River Hawks on the board with back-to-back layups. Harris and Schaub knocked down buckets from long range for the River Hawks to make it a one-possession game at 12-10 with 14:19 remaining in the first half, but the Seawolves answered with a 19-2 run to pull away, 31-12, at 7:10.

Senior Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.) hit a fade-away jumper and Thomas added a field goal of his own with 3:23 on the clock, although SBU would go onto score the last four points of the period to take a 37-16 advantage into halftime.

UMass Lowell tallied the first points of the second half thanks to baskets by Thomas and graduate student Marco Banegas-Flores (Boston, Mass.). Harris drained a pair of threes, and Schaub and Holley converted on free throws to make the score 45-29 at 11:48. The River Hawks cut the difference to as few as 15 on three occasions, including at 6:19, but they were unable to come any closer, as the Seaswolves took their largest lead of the night at 65-42 with 1:38 to play. Schaub hit a three-pointer in the final minute, but Stony Brook went on to secure the 65-45 decision.

Thursday's contest marked the 11th meeting between UMass Lowell and Stony Brook in the sport of men's basketball. The Seawolves now lead the all-time series, 7-4. The River Hawks welcome the University of Vermont to the Tsongas Center for a 2 p.m. contest featured on ESPN3 on Sunday, January 25.
