SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS:Â The River Hawks 75-62 victory over UMBC at the Tsongas Center on Thursday was the teams first against the America East this season and the first conference win in the career of first-year head coach Jenerrie Harris. Lindsey Doucette posted 13 points and 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double, while Shannon Samuels poured in a game-high 26, and set career-highís from the charity stripe, making 16-of-17. Jasmine McRoy filled the stat sheet, making all four of her three-point attempts and finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
The River Hawks trailed 19-12 with 8:08 remaining in the opening half when Priscilla Dunphy and McRoy sank back-to-back triples, sparking the River Hawks on a pivotal 25-to-8 run to close out the first half.
SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES: The reigning America East regular and conference season champions begin a stretch of three-of-four games on the road against the River Hawks. The Great Danes are riding a two-game win streak after beating AE foes Maine, 49-43, and New Hampshire, 76-65. Junior Shereesha Richards leads the conference in points (18.7 ppg) and rebounds (9.1 rpg) and is on the heels of a 15-point, 11 rebound performance against UNH.
ALL-TIME SERIES: The River Hawks own an 8-4 lead in the all-time series dating back to the schools Division II days in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC). UAlbany won both meetings last year, starting with a 50-87 victory in Lowell before a 93-47 decision at SEFCU Arena. Lindsey Doucette paced the River Hawks in the loss at home with 14 points, six rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Shannon Samuels added 12 points but the team struggled, going 19-of-57 (33.3%) from the field and 2-of-20 (10.0%) from deep. Jasmine McRoy and Samuels scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, in the loss in Albany while Doucette narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Â
HARRIS' FIRST: The River Hawks victory over the Retrievers was the first America East Conference win for first-year head coach Jenerrie Harris who was named the programs seventh head coach on June 26, 2014. At 7-7 (.500), Harris is off to the best 14-game start of any first-year head coach in program history (20+ games in season). She also has the fourth-most wins of any first-year UMass Lowell head coach, trailing Pat McCoy (8), Carol Mastacouris (10) and Deborah Preis (12).
FRONT & CENTER: Junior forward Lindsey Doucetteís 13 points and 11 rebounds against UMBC were good for her second straight double-double and fourth of the season. Her four double-doubles are second in the America East, behind only the reigning AE Player of the Year, UAlbany forward Shereesha Richards who has six. Doucette is also second in the AE in career double-doubleís posting 11 to Richards 21.
TURNING UP THE D: The River Hawks snapped their three-game streak of 10+ steals after picking up five against UMBC on Thursday. The team had set their season-high of 12 in their AE opener at Binghamton. The team has picked up 37 steals (9.3 spg) over the last four games after swiping 77 steals (6.7 spg) in the first 10 games when they broke double-figures just twice.
SAMUELS SETS RECORD: With her 16-for-17 performance from the foul line against UMBC, Shannon Samuels added her name to the River Hawks record book for most free throws made in a game. Samuels bested Darlene Orlando-Ciarcia (vs. Stonehill, 3/12/93) and Bianca Simmons (at Stonehill, 2/13/14) record of 14.
GIBBS IMPACT: Freshman Kayla Gibbs has come a long way since the first three games of the season when she didnít see any action. The forward has appeared in 11 straight games -reaching double-figures in her first three- and set a season-high with 12 rebounds against UMBC on Thursday. Gibbs has made 33 of her 58 field goal attempts which leads the AE in percentage at 56.9 percent.
