Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Junior
Ariana Darcy's (Kingston, N.Y.) three-run homerun in the seventh brought the UMass Lowell softball team within a run of Boston University, but a deep fly out ended the rally in defeat, 4-3, at BU Softball Field.
"It was a well played game on both sides," said Head Coach
Sean Cotter. "We hit some balls hard but they made all the plays."
The loss is the sixth straight for the River Hawks, as they fall to 9-35 on the season with a 1-13 record in the America East. Conversely, the Terriers extend their win streak to 11 games, their longest since 2005 and now stand at 30-18 overall and 11-4 in the Patriot League.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Darcy blasted the first pitch of the at-bat to right for her second homerun in three games. She now leads the team with five long balls on the season.
Freshman
Alisha Welch (Langley, B.C.) put forth her best collegiate performance at the plate, picking up her first three-hit game. Welch singled in each at-bat and added a run on Darcy's homer.
Sophomore
Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn.) falls to 5-17 as she allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out three.
"Marielle pitched well, I'm sure like all pitchers she had a couple pitches she'd like to have back, but for the 97 pitches she threw I thought she was really good," said Cotter.
Makinna Akers picked up her eighth win of the season for the Terriers, giving up six hits and striking out four in a complete game outing. Akers was backed by three RBI from Brittany Younan, and a solo homerun by Amy Ekart.
The River Hawks will conclude their six-game road stretch tomorrow with a doubleheader at Holy Cross. Game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Freshman Field.
