Scott Wilson signs two-year contract with Pittsburgh Penguins

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- UMass Lowell junior forward Scott Wilson (Oakville, Ont.) signed a two-year entry-level contract with the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins, as announced today by Penguins executive Vice President and general manager Ray Shero.

The contract will begin with the 2014-15 season and run through the 2015-16 campaign. Wilson was drafted by the Penguins in the seventh round (209th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Wilson, who will forego his senior season, helped the River Hawks to a Frozen Four appearance in 2013, three NCAA Tournament appearances, two Hockey East Tournament Championships (2013 and 2014) and a Hockey East Regular-Season Championship (2013) in three years with UMass Lowell.

"Scott has spent three years with us and also has seen his game grow," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "He helped change the culture of our program and we wish him the best the Pittsburgh Penguins organization.  We hope he will return to complete the final year of his degree from this world class university."

Wilson registered 95 career points (39g,56a) in 109 career games with the River Hawks, including 19 points (7g,12a) in 31 games in his final season in Lowell. Wilson had produced back-to-back 38-point campaigns for UMass Lowell prior to this year, which included 16 goals and 22 assists in each of his first two seasons.

In 2012-13, Wilson earned Hockey East All-Tournament Team honors after scoring the winning goal in the semifinal contest, and then assisting on the game-winning marker in the Hockey East Championship Game. As a freshman in 2011-12, Wilson ranked second in the NCAA among rookies with a 1.03 points per game average. He went on to win Hockey East Rookie of the Year, was selected to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team and he won the New England Hockey Writers' George C. Carens Rookie of the Year Award.
